This is the 4th one we've seen on the driveway between the house & shop. Horned lizard baby, about the size of dime. This little **** darted underneath my rear tire tread on the UTV, and I spent about 40 minutes coaxing him out so I wouldn't run over him:

When I lived in LA we had a yucca tree on the side of the house. Some years about this time, they would hatch from beneath that tree. They looked like spiders darting about at first glance. The best way to predict the future is to invent it.

It seems like we get 2 "hatch" times, early Spring and late Summer. I have quite a few big daddy horned lizards on the property, but they are very slow and easy to catch. Love having them around.

Our evenings get quite cool, so even after a 100 degree day, evening can be 68 degrees. These guys come out at sunset to lay on the warm concrete as temps cool quickly.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 -

Horned frogs used to be abundant here in NWFla when I was a kid in the 60's. They have totally disappeared now.If you can't hear a difference, don't waste your money.
-
Technically, they are lizards, as they are a reptile. I know many folks call them "horned toads" "horned frogs" etc; but they're not amphibians.
We are fortunate that we have a bunch of them on the property--likely because I don't cut the other 12 acres of desert, so they don't get disturbed, and there's plenty of ant hills for them to feed.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 -

LOL, this one was trying my patience. Normally they are pretty lethargic and slow, but this bugger could scoot. I was coming in with the UTV, and almost ran him over. I stopped to pick him up, and he ran right under the tread of my rear tire! So--I couldn't move the UTV, and rain was coming. I finally came up with the idea to get a pull tie and push it between the gaps in the tread and the concrete to coax him out.

We used to call them horny toads down here in S.E. Tx. Seems like they left the area here in the early 60's.
