rti150 / sub hookup

Hello all, first timer here. Just purchased a set of RTI150's. I have an older Technique GX490 which does not have a line output for the sub. What would be the optimum setup? I'm told that if I run the speakers off of the sub output, I'm going to lose alot of the bass on the RTI's. Can I run speaker wires in parallel from my receiver to the speakers and the sub? Also what would you recommend for speaker wire... gauge and manufacturer?
Thanks
Thanks

Does your receiver have pre amp output's ? If so you may be able to hook up your sub to this.

Florida Steve, infortunately, not preamp output for the sub. I'm saving my pennies for a new receiver but just trying to make the best of what I have now.

You can use speaker wire and not lose any base to the 150s if you go parallel. If you wire in series you control the crossover point on the sub. As for speaker wire, look for 12 gauge oxygen free copper, whatever fits the budget.Graham

GradyJ,
Your receiver doesn't have Sub output, I understand. But does it have any preamp outputs for add on amp's?
If so you could plug to sub cable to this L or R not the best, but you will not lose anything with your RTi150's.
If no preamp output, sorry the other post is best, in my eye's;)Originally posted by gradyj

If the LFE inputs on the sub disable the crossover, and he used the preouts on the amp, he would be feeding a full frequency signal to the sub.Graham

I'll have to check the receiver this evening to see if there are preamp outputs.
Thanks -
I had the same problem once, when I needed more bass using RT800i's run my sub out of the preamp output's for L / R front channels. I did this because I liked the pure audio feature with my Onkyo 898 receiver, using the LFE when using pure audio mode shut off LFE.
My sub run fine the crossover shouldn't care about the upper freq it should only pass low signals.
The only disadvantage I had was that RT800i don't like low freq that my sub liked.
Also by the way also use now RTi150's the sub if used for stereo 2 channel is not really needed. RTi150's go low enough for no sub, movies are different but I think you need a nice sub to over do the RTi150 on the low end.Originally posted by gatemplin

no preamp output on my Technics GX490.. no such luck. Looks like it's time for a new receiver or possibly a preamp and amp. does anyone have suggestions for a decent preamp and 5.1 amp? As far as receivers, I've been looking at the Onkyo801, Denon 3803 and the Pioneer 43 (all since last night when I didn't find a preamp output on my receiver) I looking to keep the total price ....1000. Don't know if I can do that with seperates...

For a temp fix with your old amp, you could always run a pair of RCA cables from REC OUT on your old receiver to the sub input on your sub amp. Then you would have to adjust the crossover on the sub amp by ear (or run a freq. sweep) until you get the best coverage. This way you can enjoy your current setup until you decide to upgrade. If you have further question please let us know.
Note: The REC OUT should output any analog signal that you have coming in. Just food for thought.

BeginnersLuck, would you recommend the Outlaw receiver and amps?

I do highly recommend Outlaw amps. My receiver is very neutral and seems to have endless power. If you can save up about $1500, the Outlaw 950 + 7100 combination will blow you away.
On a side note, it's nice to have gear that people don't know about, but sounds great. People always comment on how great my HT sounds and they walk up to the rack and state "Outlaw, never heard of them before." I like to be different from the norm...and what you get for the money is just incredible.
If you have any hesitation about Outlaw products...don't...I highly recommend them!
