Looking for a little advice

Been looking at stands recently, and can't find anything I like within my budget that fits my needs. Cheap construction, to shelf spaced to close together, to narrow, etc.
I'm beginning to get an idea of what I want, and was getting ready to start drawing up some rough plans. I guess my question is pretty simple. How far should I allow, width, for large components, AVR or amps. I was thinking 21 inches should cover pretty much anything.
As an FYI, the height from bottom shelf to middle shelf will be 12 inches, and planning on 20 inch depth.
Any advice or insight is appreciated.

The standard width for full size components is 17 inches, so 21 is plenty. The space between shelves varies with the component, obviously power amps need a lot of space. Perhaps make your shelves adjustable.Political Correctness'.........defined

Thanks. Was only planning on having the bottom and second shelf at fixed height. Figured the power hungry components would sit there, and 12 inch height would allow for enough ventilation without a need for a fan to be incorporated.
The absolute maximum number of components I'll have is 6, so if I go 3 across, will probably leave the middle shelf open. If I go 2 across, then I plan on making the upper ones adjustable.
Still in the thinking stage. Appreciate the advice though.
