I own a pair of Allison 6s that I purchased ca. 1982. I still own them.

Cosmetically, mine are not in as good condition as the ones in the CL ad. My front grills cracked, as grills on these speakers often do. This is a real weak spot in there design and manufacture. I had to replace my grills with fabric grills that I constructed with parts from Parts Express.

More importantly, VR3 mods rebuilt my crossovers with contemporary components and replaced the cheap, clip-style stock speaker wire clips with Cardas binding posts.

Sound quality from these speakers is well above what one would expect from such a compact "package." Properly placed against a wall with sufficient space around them "to breath" and properly driven with a good preamp/amp combination, they produce very nice sound from virtually any kind of music.

I currently use them with a PS Audio PerfectWave DAC MKI, which I also use as the preamp, with a vintage Perreaux PMF 2350 amp (200 watts RMS into 8 ohms).

I am now trying to complete a project to build speaker stands for these speakers using line-control stands given to me by @motorstereo. When I have this project completed, I'll give this system in a permanent home.

The set of Allison 6s for sale on CL look excellent. To make them really "sing," in my humble opinion, calls for some upgrades to modern components. My experience is that folks that are Allison aficionados frown upon modifing speakers, unlike most Polkies on this Forum who own vintage Polks.

This is the first pair of these speakers that I have seen for sale -- not that I have been looking for a pair -- but the price seems a bit on the high side to me. However, the price is "what the market will bear." I don't know whether $200.00 could get you better speakers in a compact package like these.
Family Room, Innuos Statement streamer (Roon Core) with Morrow Audio USB cable to McIntosh MC 2700 pre with DC2 Digital Audio Module; AQ Sky XLRs to CAT 600.2 dualmono amp, Morrow Elite Speaker Cables to NOLA Baby Grand Reference Gold 3 speakers. Power source for all components: Silver Circle Audio Pure Power One with dedicated 20 amp circuit to main panel.

Exercise Room, Innuos Streamer via Cat 6 cable connection to PS Audio PerfectWave MkII DAC w/Bridge II, AQ King Cobra RCAs to Perreaux PMF3150 amp (fully restored and upgraded by Jeffrey Jackson, Precision Audio Labs), Supra Rondo 4x2.5 Speaker Cables to SDA 1Cs (Vr3 Mods Xovers and other mods.), Dreadnaught with Supra Rondo 4x2.5 interconnect cables by Vr3 Mods. Power for each component from dedicated 20 amp circuit to main panel, except Innuos Statement powered from Silver Circle Audio Pure Power One.

Like all of Roy Allison's loudspeakers, they have excellent sound and were designed for real-world acoustic environments. The Six, entry level of the original Allison series, isn't one I know all that well; no idea what a pair's worth on the open market today. By and large they hold value well (given that we're talking 40 year old components).

PS Last I knew, Roy Allison is still alive and reasonably well (and still living in New England) -- he's one of the very last of the old guard of hifi innovators of the 1950s.

Stereophile published a great interview with Allison and his old boss, the late Edgar Villchur, a few years back; a good read, IMO:

That's about double what I think a pair typically goes for. Though they have been re-foamed & are in excellent condition.

I got a pair of those that I have to get re-foamed sooner or later.
