Need some B&K Ref 50 help

I'm sure it's a simple setting, but whenever I turn it on, it will always go back to Dolby D 7 and for now I'm trying to keep it on Stereo 3 as I'm not using my rear speakers right now.

I can go back to the settings and change the input to stereo 3 or the front mode button to select Stereo 3, but how do I save Stereo 3 so it defaults to that, or anything I want it to when I power it on?

You set it up that way in the main menu when your setting up the system at first. It will always default to the main system settings. After that, you set up the inputs as to what speakers you want for each input.

If you originally set up the main system settings as D-7, that's what it will default to every time you turn it on.

This could have been done by the previous owner as I'm the 2nd owner. I did read the manual but it seemed as if it would save any changes I made.

If I do a master reset, would this affect any firmware updates that may have been done and stored in the eeprom? Or would that just be a setting reset?

I don't know for sure. Make the changes in "setting up the system".....see if that works.

My SAT source is setup for 3 speakers in surround mode, stereo is 2 channel. I don't have the surrounds turned on or the sub.

When I exit and reopen Zone 1, my speakers return to 7. Could this be the digital 5.1 signal entering the pre from the sat box automatically changing it to 7 speakers?

Basically what I'm after is 3 channel output from 5.1 input, keeping the dialogue in the center channel.

Update after diving deeper into the settings, under the advanced tab, there's a setting for surround mode detection, auto or manual.

I changed to manual and my settings stay the same now.

My only question is, even in auto, I don't mind it going from stereo to D7 if I choose a blu ray, but how can it go to 7 speakers if I only have 3 turned on?

At least it doesn't default now to 7 speakers but seems it should change surround settings automatically, not number of speakers.

Unless that's what it's supposed to do.

Did you set up each input ? You tell it what surround setting to use and how many speakers for each input. You need to do that.

I would leave it on automatic, but in the main menu under system setup, tell it you only have 3 speakers, sub or no sub, that way the default setting it goes to will be those three. Also cable input should be set up as the same 3 speakers or any other input you only want the 3 speakers to run on.

That way, when a DD signal comes in, it will re-route those additional channels to the 3 speakers you selected.

'Under speaker setup I have front and center on, surrounds and sub are off. or "NONE" as it reads in the menu.

Are you under a certain input, or in the main system setup ? Just make sure your in the main system setup is all I'm sayin'.

    Factory reset doesn't revert firmware.
Personally, I prefer to factory reset all used equipment when I first get it, just so I can start from the factory baseline. Then you're not wondering about stuff like this, and can get it set up the way you like from the getgo. I've reset my 507 a few times when I was first messing around with it.

Did you get the remote with this unit, too? Is it custom programmed or factory defaulted? I find it easier to get around the system using the remote. If it's customized, there's also a button combo that will factory reset it if you don't have the programming cable or software for it.

How about the unit programming software? Takes a little work to get it going, but once you're in and get the hang of it, it's a pretty powerful programming tool. Also easy to do basic programming without any of this once you get the hang of it. You can just do more at one time in the software.

I did get the remote but I haven't tried to use the PC to program it, I have all the paperwork and CD for setup also and it (remote) was programmed by the original owner.

if custom programmed for a bunch of stuff you don't use, you can issue a key combination to reset it to the B&K defaults. I think it's to
hold down stop and main for about 10 seconds, then hit "all" in the top left corner.

I had that in my notes from a forum post here on RemoteCentral.
