are you guys into shadow bands ?

From my own perspective, I do not endorse this idea of a few members of an original band being backed up by what was called a shadow band. In a few instances it has worked and very well at that. #1 would be The Beach Boys. Bill Graham had large shows called DOG shows (Days On The Green) and would be 3 or more A-list bands on the bill. This show opened w/ Commander Cody>The Beach Boys> The Grateful Dead. Both by crowd reaction & response and continual applause Bill Graham gave the BB an extra 20/25 minutes of playing time and they had about 10 other instrumentalists to augment their sound and it worked. More recently I saw 3/5ths of the original Moody Blues again w/ a backing band and were fantastic. This can and does work if the players, venues and songs all align.
Then you have total retreads like Styx, Foreigner,Boston,Toto,Guns & Roses and years ago they even tried to do a copy of Procal Harum which was horrific. Also we can't forget The Dead themselves who are morphing into a John Mayer Band of some kind. So,What do you think, capitalism at it's worst or a need for the past to repeat it self ?

It helps if the singer is still there, and 3/5ths is not terrible especially if vocals and guitar are original, but some are ridiculous in what they try to get away with.

In 1979 I went to see Steppenwolf at George Washington university in d.c.

I didn't even consider John Kay not being there singing.

As it turned out, Goldie Mcjohn on keyboards was the only original; fittingly, his keyboards went haywire and 3/4s of the first song had no sound from him

To me, if the band is mostly stand ins, or are missing a key player or two, they're just a cover band. I went to see the Allman Bros band a few years ago. They had Butch and Jaimoe (who hardly played), and Gregg + Warren Haynes and some other really good musicians. I was very disappointed.

They played well, but just didn't have the magic of the original lineup.

At a certain point they're just capitalizing on the name. I think bands like this shouldn't be allowed to call themselves by the same name.
