Yamaha rx A1010

Two nights ago I was perusing online classified (Kijiji) in their electronic section. I stumbled upon a virtually new Yamaha Rx A1010. I did some research and this model came up quite high on reviewers lists. I've been wanting an HDMI receiver with pre-outs for a long time but never found one that really worked for me. I went to go take a look at it yesterday during lunch and it happened to follow me to me vehicle. I paid 400cad for it and that seems to be a decent deal. It was missing the YPAO mic. I called Yamaha Canada and had one shipped for 17$ plus shipping. Not bad at all.
Once the kids where tucked in tight, I proceeded to take everything apart and remove my HK 335 which has been amazing, I'll be sad to see it go. I was able to remove from the rats nest 5 cables seeing that everything will now be running off HDMI. Got it set up for the most part, fiddled around with some settings and to get accustomed to navigation of its menu and options. (I also had a laptop with the E-manual next to me for reference). I plugged in a cat5 Ethernet cable and ran a firmware update. Also used it to access Internet radio and the H: on my PC.
I really like how this receiver looks, very clean front with a big access door panel on the front for countless inputs. I was only able to test out a couple TV shows, FM radio and internet radio. Once the YPAO arrives either tomorrow or Monday, I'll calibrate it and proceed to more testing. So far I'm impressed with the sound, mind you I'm using the pre-outs to my Rotel to power my speakers. Video, thus far seems good, again I have not tested a real DVD or Bluray yet so I cannot comment on this. Streaming shows through my boxee, I'm impressed.
This does not sound like my old Yamaha I had about 10 years ago at all, nor does it look like it either. This one looks high(er)-end.
If anyone has tips or tricks, please feel free to pass them on. I'm looking forward to playing with the settings some more and getting to know this receiver. My next challenge too is updating my Harmony to control it, in due time....

  • I have the same one. It's amazing, you'll love it. Also the internal amps sound fantastic too. Mine is only powering the center at this point, but I have tried it with the surrounds as well. It is easily the finest ave I have owned. What is also nice is the speed of its internal processing, it is extremely snappy when navigating menus...I would be sure that the dynamic range options are set to max, mine arrived set to minimum, which is similar to a late night function. It took me a bit to figure out what was going on.

    @jeremymarcinko ,

    Thanks, I'm enjoying so far (which isn't much). couldn't test the sound really due to the kids sleeping. Thanks for the tip, I'll check it out tonight. I think I scored, not a steal but not a rip-off either. I brought the cd to work so I can read up on the functions. But I'm somewhat stuck waiting on the YPAO mic to arrive.

    Do you have yours hooked up to your PC for file sharing?
  • Yes I do.

    I've been watching some of the Yamaha line on eBay. I'd be interested in what you think of it.
    HT/2Channel: Emotiva MMC-1, Adcom GFA-555II, Polk SDA 3.1's, Teac TN-300 TT, Polk Center and Sub.

    Bedroom system: Carver CT-24, Parasound HCA-800II, Monitor 10's

    Additional projects: RTA 12c's
  • I use jriver to stream flac files to the rx-a1010, via DLNA.

    Got it running off the app on my phone. Pretty sweet. it will play the music on my phone and I can control the receiver. I'm still waiting for the YPAO mic to arrive.

    Does this receiver have a standby mode? or does it just turn off? my HK has one button to put it in SBM and another to shut down. trying to get an understanding
  • I do not think there is an off , only standby.

    That's what it seems like to me. Now I'm trying to figure out what is causing some snap crackle pop in my speakers once the system is shut down. None present when using the system but some once it powers down. It might be some interference with some power cable or a router back there. I'll have to get in there and take a look. I think my YPAO has arrived. I have something from Purolator to pick up tonight after 4pm.
