Wow....the video footage on BBC is surreal. Unfortunately the official number of 7 deaths seems way to low based on the video.

Wonder how the Chinese are going to spin this one? Explosive materials that weren't being handled correctly or by safety regulations?

That's awful. I read the death toll is up to nearly 50 with several hundred injured.Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. What I am tryin to say is, is that the course of your life, well its changing, and you don't even see it- Forest Bondurant

There are probably a couple of these a day in China. Tianjin is the port city of Beijing and almost as densely populated, It is also an old Treaty Port and an industrial center for the capital. There is, in fact, an old area of the city that is preserved for tourism that is still populated by various European eateries, etc. And a section of the city where the CHINESE go to buy high quality counterfeit copies of Rolexes, Guccis, etc.
A high speed rail connects it to Beijing and literally turns the city into a suburb access part of Beijing. It is NOT surprising that factory standards and safeguards are problematic. I remember touring a sweat shop years ago and being disturbed by the level of NOISE pollution that was deafening as I watched hundreds of young women sewing furiously with no protection. I turned to my host to voice my disapproval, he nodded politely and did not respond.
The literature is full of chemical spills, poisoning of local water supplies, increased cancer rates, unbreathable air, village protests that are unheard or shut down! But, hey, lest we think that China is alone, we have a few cases in the U.S. as well just not as many? Darn Gov't regulations!Currently orbiting Bowie's Blackstar.!

The US around the beginning of the 20th century was a tough place to work.
Workplace deaths were very common. Lost limbs and fingers were routine.
This is a common deal as countries gear up, and sooner or later the
rules tighten up. The fire in NYC that killed a lot of young women was the
event that started workplace safety in the US.

I remember as a small child in 1944, Cleveland had a liquid natural gas explosion. It killed 130 people, my uncle included.
