CD Swap Program

has anyone ever thought of creating a CD Swap program on here? I think this would be cool becuase people could be introduced to different kinds of music they've never heard before.
I've got about 3,000 CDs and I can't listen to them all at the same time, so I'd be more than willing to help get this started. I set something like this up when I was in college to expose more people to different kinds of music, worked out pretty good.
How many of you guys have heard of 2 Pound Planet or 100% Live? How many of you have Lenny Pickett's Borneo Horns CD?
Then again, maybe everyone on here already has everything they'd be interested in...I do't know. I just thought I'd throw it out there as a suggestion...

I would be interested. I don't have 3000 CD's, something closer to 80, but sure, count me in.
How do you see this going down? Boxing up 10 or 20 CD's and shipping them to each other? Make copies, then ship them back? The only thing I have a concern with is the shipping cost could become more than the cost of just buying CD's.
Here is another idea: We all list our CD's somewhere. Then, two people get together and agree to exchange maybe 10 CD's. You then make copies of the 10 requested CD's, and mail them to the other guy. This way, you only have to pay shipping 1 time.
Just my thoughts, you are in charge, so handle it however you want. Count me in.

I too feel it's a great idea! I would be more than happy to lend a disc here and there in the return I just might receive something that tweaks my world...something I never would have given a second thought to buying in the store.
I would like to be counted in as well!

Don't mention "making copies" of the CD's. Simply, you let someone borrow them for a month or two, then send them back to you. Otherwise this post is gonna go bye-bye.

I get your drift.... wink wink.....Bob Mayo, on the keyboards. Bob Mayo. -
Yeah, we won't discuss any 'copying' in here...what you do when you get the CD is up to you, but I'm sure Polk doesn't want to condone copying on their site.
I'd really like to get the input of one of the Polk guys on this, since this is ultimately your site...Micah, Justin, Ken...have any input on this??? I think this is a good idea, but ultimately we'd be using the Polk site for this, so I wanna make sure it's cool with them as well...
As for how everything goes down, I just figured to leave that up to all us members. I figured people could just post what they have to offer and what they are looking for and the thing should pretty much run itself... -
OK, I got blessings from Justin the webguy, so we are okay to get this rolling...
My vision is more of a temporary trade than a permanent trade. You'll get a CD keep it for a couple of weeks or whatever, then send it back to the owner, those details can be worked out individually. But temporary trades can certainly be permanent.
Probably it will be best for us just to post a list of our CDs (as an attached text file or something). I'm also open to people posting requests for something they are looking for.
I'll be posting some of mine this weekend, but anyone feel free to start before then. I'm not sure how this will play out, it just seemed like a good idea. -

I know i own that, but may have loaned it out...let me check... -
On a serious note....
Lets say everyone types up a list of their CD's. Where do we post the list?Bob Mayo, on the keyboards. Bob Mayo. -
Just a thought, I've seen this work on another forum. Here were the rules they laid out: (just to give you something to consider)
/////
The idea is to ship a box to one another with music CD's. Once the box is shipped to you, you can swap as many Cd's as you want. But, to ensure that the box will grow...you must add at least one additional CD to the box before you ship it. if you take one CD out...you add in two. If you take two CD's out...you add in three...and, if you take no CD's out...you still add one CD before sending it to the next person. For those of you that may have a CD selection that is smaller than the number of CD's in the box...you may swap for an even trade...with no need to add the one additional cd.
There is really no way to predict exactly how this Music Box will work...what selection it will have...or if it will even grow. This idea is based on the honor system and this idea has the opportunity to grow with you as a member...and it will grow because you are a member.
Keep in mind that only Original Manufactured CDs are to be shipped...NO CD-R's. Also make sure that the CD's you swap or add are in good shape and play thru...so no scratched up disks that won't play. All Music is welcome in the Music Box and you can swap a CD of any genre for another of any genre. Try not to add any duplicate CD's into the box. Any CD you put into the box (for swap or trade) should be placed in a zip-lock bag. In this zip-lock bag include with it the CD, the liner notes and the back label. As an option you can also include a 3"x5" card with each cd and write our favorite tracks down so if someone didn't have much time in a week, he/she could check out the suggested tracks. All in all...you will be including basically everything except the jewel case. You can save your jewel cases for any CD you take out. Doing this will not only save us room for more music CD's...but also keep the weight down...as we are going to include all our friends overseas.
/////
The box is still going, the rules recently changed to state a '2cd' max swap policy, meaning you can swap UP TO 2cd's from the box.
I'll be happy to participate also. And can 'donate' a handfull of cd's to get started.
Cheers,

Almost every CD I ever loaned out was received back scratched up. With a dumbfounded look the offending party almost always says something like: It still plays, what is the problem or oh well, they get like that. Worst case when it wont even play anymore I've heard it plays fine for them, must be something wrong with my player.
The other problem is when the box gets lost in shipping.
I think only copies should be mailed around.

Avantgarde horns, 300b tubes, thats the kinda crap I want... -
I'm with madmax on this one...
Although, as stated earlier, we will not actually copy CD's since that is wrong & against the law, I think members can figure out what to do on their own.
I would like to see it work like this: two participants contact each other via personal email, leaving this site out of the process completely, and make arrangements with each other as to which CD's will be shared. This site will be used only for sharing CD lists.
I think that is a good way to ensure we don't get Polk's site into any trouble.Bob Mayo, on the keyboards. Bob Mayo. -
Sounds to me like you are just after something for nothing. If it's going to stay off the board, why are you even discussing it here?
Why would Polk get in trouble, if you are not being dishonest?
If we swap cd's, I'm in. I will not however be making and distributing copies of copyrighted material.
Cheers,

OK, here's my take on how the whole thing should work:
People will attach a list (as a text file) on this thread of CDs they are willing to trade wth, the more the better. People will post any requests on this thread as well. These requests can be for specific CDs or just a music style in general (maybe I've never heard good Bluegrass and I want to hear some). Everyone will see the lists and requests and trade will just happen naturally.
If Russ is looking for the soundtrack to Pee Wee's Big Adventure, he can post that request here. If someone has it, they can offer it up, either Russ can offer something in exchange for it or they may just let him use it with nothing in return.
The idea was not to create a permanent trading program, though trades can be made permanent if both parties agree. I originally had in mind only temporary trades. I send you a CD, you listen to it a while and decide if you like it. If you really like it, maybe we can work something out or you can just send it back to me and go buy a copy. There will be no public discussion or knowledge of any copying.
The idea here is mostly to expose each other to different types of music. This whole idea formulated a while back when I bought a Robbie Robertson CD on here. I would have never heard that if I hadn't bought it here, now I kinda like it...
I know that my idea is not very practical with hundreds of people in a forum becuase it would get too messy, but we don't have that many regulars that this couldn't work. I know there are hundreds of people registered, but I only see maybe 20 or so regulars on here, you know who you are, so I think that this can be a manageable process if we all trust each other...and I've seen the posts the last few days with regards to Har, so I know that trust is a high priority here.
having said all that, I'll be posting my stuff up here hopefully this weekend.
If anyone disagrees with me, let me know. I'm totally open to ideas. I did like the idea that Russ found on another forum as well, I just kinda like the idea of an open trading forum better, but that's just me.
P.S. Sorry about the Pee Wee comment Russ, I gotta start getting a feel for people's tolerance levels... -
I'm right with you on this one Polkmaniac, I don't want a permanent trading program either.
I think we should start a new thread that is JUST the CD lists & requests for CD's. This th'd is starting to get a little on the long side.Bob Mayo, on the keyboards. Bob Mayo. -

it's an interesting idea to swap CD's. but I doubt I have anything anyone would want to listen to or doesn't already own themselves.
i'd be afraid that the CD's would get lost, or scratched or who knows what. I guess only let go in the box those CD's you're willing to let go.
How do you keep track of who took what CD out of the box? Do most of them get returned to their rightful owners?
I'd like to see this up and running for a few months before i jumped in.
I'm in need of some new music.. but I don't know where to turn for new or interesting stuff.PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

Take a look at my earlier post...not really thinking the box idea would work. I didn't get my stuff uploaded this weekend becuase a storm had our internet out here...I'll do it one day this week... -
the law and rules for cd burning wheather it be a music cd or a program cd you can and will not be prosecuted for copying one cd for a BACK UP COPY AS LONG AS IT IS LISTED AS A BACK UP COPY IN CASE YOU MIGHT BREAK OR LOSE YOUR ORIGINAL YOU ARE ALLOWED and their is not a thing the law can do about that.
sorry for yelling just want to get th attention. i would be intrested in this program but i only have about 50 to 60 cds and they are only country new style. and a couple rock and roll not much to contribute.:D -

I've manage to neglect this one a bit, and this thread is getting long...so I'm doing two things:
Having Justin remove this sticky.
I'll create a new post in the Music and Movies forum with a couple things - basic process - My CD list... -
Cool. I'd forgotten about this list myself.
With the 3 day weekend, I'll get my list posted after yours.Bob Mayo, on the keyboards. Bob Mayo.
