Monitor 7B vs LS-50

I'm currently running a set of LS-50s that I got off craigslist. I like them quite a bit. I now have an opportunity to pick up a pair of Monitor 7Bs. I'm wondering how the two speakers compare. FWIW, I listen to a lot of acoustic rock, folk and jazz. I'm not a bass head but I like nice, clean bass. Any thoughts from those of you who have had a chance to listen to both these models of Polks would be appreciated. Also wondering--are the LS 50s a newer speaker? Anyone know where I can dig up and compare specs?

Welcome to CP! I've not heard the 7B's myself so I can't help you there. I do own LS50's though. I really enjoy them. They are a newer model than the 7B's, mid to late 90's. Here is a scan of the manual.

Hey, thanks for the manual. Last time I visited this site, it was easier to get information on the vintage models. Anyone have any opinions to offer on the Monitor 7Bs? I'm thinking they are probably overpriced and I will stick with my LS50s--for now, anyway. They're very nice, but I'm always curious. . .

Welcome! I have three pair of Monitor 7s, two pair of 7's with the Peerless tweeter which was used initially in the 7's. My third pair are Series II Monitor 7 with the SL-2500 tweeter. The M7 is considered by many to be the sweet spot of the original Polk Monitor series (models 4, 5, 7 & 10's). I have never owned any of the LS line speakers that came after the original Monitor line, but I have heard them, they are a good speaker also. If you can pickup the 7's at a reasonable price locally, say around $100.00 then do so. You may want to gently press in on the middle speaker in the cabinet with your fingers spread apart just inside the surround. Press in 1/4 to 1/2 inch was slowly and listen for any scratching noise. If you hear it this indicates a bad driver. Be sure the music and power to speakers are off when you do this. The bottom driver is not a true speaker, it is a non-powered passive radiator used by Polk as an alternative to an acoustic suspension loudspeaker. Maybe mrhardy will chime in with some additional info. he's the keeper of all knowledge. I'm with you and others about the new forum's loss of the data on the past Polk speaker models being available on the forum, such a waste.
