Can someone explain this to me?

Had I known about this forum before I bought my electronics I may have made some different choices. (Instead I relied on a friend...)

Anyway, I have been trying to get a better understanding of my receiver's real capabilities so that I can better understand what I am working with here. After talking to the Outlaw guys I have determined that the pre/pro section is considered very good. What I am trying to understand is the true power output but I am still too new to this to understand some of the stuff that they are talking about. Can someone explain these to me?

Specifically, I am trying to understand the section on "Output at Clipping". The notes indicate that the true wattage is much higher but I don't completely understand what they are talking about.

I'm pretty confused right now and would appreciate any help that you guys can give me.

Amplifiers or amplifier sections of receivers are usually, read hopefully, rated in terms of continuous wpc RMS across at least the listenable frequency range.

Beyond this, most amplifiers will supply additional wpc if you will on demand i.e. they can upon demand when the source calls for it, supply additional power for short periods of time before distortion begins. In the old days and I guess still to some degree this was/is referred to as headroom.

If you are running the pre-outs for your mains to the Outlaw monoblocks then the Outlaws amplifier specifications will be of much larger concern to you than those of the Onkyo.

You are right, I am running the Outlaw's to the RTi12's and am quite happy. I guess that I am just trying to:

    1. Educate myself

    2. Understand my receivers capabilities better

    3. Figure out how my Onkyo compares to other brands such as Denon and HK when it comes to performance. (not SQ as that is pretty subjective)

You want to look for 3 things (primarily):

    1. Output rated in watts/rms (RMS=75% of the waveform peak)
    2. Current capability
    3. Dynamic headroom (related to current capability)

    Quidelines:

    1. Output-up to you, how efficient are your speakers vs how loud you like your music.
    2. Current-A good amplifier will have a 40amp or better current output capability
    3. Dynamic Headroom-1.0dB or better, 1.5dB is fairly typical of a good quality amplifier (higher is better)

There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin

aculey rms is .707 of peak and average is just below that.
