Marantz 2270

So I posted a while back about having to sell my dared pre. My adcom gdc 600. Modified by George. You know which one. Selling my adcom gfa 555.
And being bummed by it all
How is it that my 45ish year old receiver is sounding so **** good?
The adcom amp yes it had impact. But it was maybe too up front.
Is the 2270 more tube like than the dated? The dared was never mellow. Very in your face
I don't know. I thought I'd be miserable but I'm enjoying this downgrade!

There has to be something to that '70's Marantz sound Mike. Have known many folks over the years who had them and loved them. A lot of them wished they hadn't of sold them.

It's the musicality that attracts you. Though maybe some different tubes may have played better with your Dared.

To me, musicality is first and foremost. It can make up for a little less detail, a little less this or that. When it's right, you don't pay attention to all those audiophile words we use to describe sound.

    Hey Mike,
curious, have you ever had the 2270 serviced or modded?
which speakers do you use with it?
I was looking at some vintage stuff a while back and the 2270 was on my short list, but I just couldn't seem to get my hands on one without having to pay through the nose.
    I disabled signatures.

A 40+ year old receiver has issues. Most likely the electrolytic caps
are way out of spec. I changed them out in one of my Marantz
amps, and now I've got some detail and highs back. The Sansui
had very good details and good bass after I re-capped it.
    Time takes a toll.

40+ years old and still kickin', ;) quality Japanese products. Makes me wonder how the Chinese products out now will compare.

Old Marantz receivers have a softer sound, and highs that are a little rolled off. That may be due to the old caps or not. Don't really know. But they do simulate something more tube like. However, some find them "muddy". And I've found that synergy is very important with these amps. So the right speakers make a huge difference.

I also find that I do NOT hear a significant difference between models that Marantz aficionados claim; they say that the 2230 or 2270 have some special sound that is better than other models. I don't hear anything but the HOUSE sound in most all Marantz's, and I do NOT mean the B series because I have not heard many of those. I mean the 22/23XX series, no Bs. From what I gather the Bs are a slightly lighter build quality?

When I run my Monitor 10As on my 2265 there is just something "right" about that. It's a sweet spot. And there is a LOT of power for 65 watts x 2, I believe someone on youtube tested this unit to 80 watts x 2 peak so like many vintage receivers the ratings are understated.

    Enjoy!

Yes I agree. I read that the 2270 bench tests at 105 wpb. They do seem to be not as precise as my adcom on the upper end. But it does have impact and a less in your face soundstage.
I also have a 2220b. Another under rated receiver
