What benefits do DVR's offer?
Anyone got any experience with third party DVR's or in building a DVR?
I'm just starting to look into this so have no experience.

I don't watch much broadcast/cable tv, and have grown very much accustomed to the "on demand" benefits of streaming. Another thing I'm noticing is that I have pretty much zero tolerance for commercials these days during what little tv I actually do watch.

I am trying to avoid renting a DVR from the cable company.
Would like to get rid of my cable box entirely if I can. Nothing new, but they get you coming and going these days. Do DVR's like Tivo also work as HD tuners?

Is Tivo the be-all-end-all option here?
Is the content available for as long as you have it recorded, or does it expire?

I notice that Tivo supports Hulu Plus.
I was trying the Hulu Plus trial and was pretty disappointed to see that there are commercials. If one uses Hulu through Tivo, can we still ffwd through those commercials? I don't think I can do that over Roku.

Can Tivo also store streaming channel content from Amazon, Netflix, and other? Or does it just work as a streamer in use with these?
I disabled signatures.
