Turntable & Cartridge problems & questions

I've haven't kept up with audio equipment in years.. I got my turntable out the other day-its been in a closet for years (but worked fine when I put it up). My IMS MC-5 high output moving coil cartridge is now bad for some reason, and the control logic on the turntable functions is wacked out.
My question on the turntable...repair or replace?? It is a 1979 or 1980 Onyko CP1280F. It was around $500 back then. Its a real nice turntable, but nothing exotic. It will cost approx. $160 to $200 to fix it. I read where there is a apparently respectable Pro-Ject Debut Carbon turntable with an Ortofon M2 mm cartridge included for around $350.
Any ideas or opinions on how that turntable would compare with my Onyko (if fixed)?
The Onyko is large, heavy, & well made-new stuff never seems to be as heavy duty & as well built
A replacement IMS MC-5 is around $230. Is that still considered a good cartridge? There are some Denon MC cartridges starting for around $100+
So-invest around $400 to $450 to repair turntable & replace with same cartridge, or go with new stuff? Or just buy CDs of the vinyl records I might actually still play?
I really have no idea what to do, any advise & recommendations appreciated

There's that Onkyo on eBay right now for $500 OBO. The Onkyo weighs more than double the Debut Carbon. I'd take the Onkyo.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

I bought my son a Pro-Ject Carbon DC / 2M for his upcoming bday but have not unboxed it yet. It was $399 shipped.[
