TV question, what would you do?

So, a month or so ago I dropped a Vizio M series (2014) off at a local repair shop to be looked at. A friend gave this to me for free, his apartment had a lightning strike and was paid out for it but never got rid of it. They called me a few days after letting me know it would be $300 parts/labor to fix it. I said great, go ahead. Sounds like a cheap 60" to me, right? I only agreed because this series got great picture reviews. Now they are calling me back and telling me it's going to be an additional $100 to fix it.

That's not my gripe.

I understand finding more damage after one part has been replaced, I deal with that all the time. I am frustrated that this has been a month long process and just now I'm hearing about it. I called them the week before last and everything was supposed to be fine, but it hadn't been fixed yet. Should I even consider asking for a labor discount, or even asking what their part cost markup is to try and negotiate that? Just in talking to them customer service isn't the best, and it seems like a bother that I'm even a customer.

Also, I'm not sure it's worth $400 to fix this tv, so that's another option also.

Any input? TIA.

$400 is a great deal for a 60" Vizio. Have they given you any kind of time frame or said what is taking so long? If it's a bother that you're a customer I would find someone else to do repairs in the future. Talking about a discount with them might be more trouble than it's worth.

400 bucks later, you'll still have a used, lightning struck television. I'd tell em to keep it. (and to work on their diagnostic and customer service policies)

I wouldn't put $400 into a lighting damaged TV unless they are willing to warranty it against any failure for at least a year. What else in there is marginal & will go out at any moment? Sounds like a money pit to me.

All TV's are money pits....where you going to find a 60 incher for 400 bucks ? Though I might be inclined to ask to see it working, their idea of "fixed" and yours might be miles apart.

if you're not bound to it at this point, due to the lack of timely response and concerns for reliability, I'd be seriously considering walking away from it, just out of principle and for the aggravation. presuming these haven't been legitimate parts acquisition delays and such.

as others have said, it's a lot to put into repair without a warranty, even at $300. what's an extra hundred at this point, though.

as noted above - "fixed" should be fixed to oe spec/your satisfaction. what if this thing doesn't work properly? will you even be able to tell?

what's the tv go for new?
if you can get out of it, I'd consider dumping it at this point, just for the aggravation. money aside, poor customer service and shoddy/questionable repairs tend to gnaw at me for a long while after. not worth it, imho.

We have a good repair shop here in town with a second reputation that offers a 90 day warranty. If it lasts that long you're probably good. So I guess I would want to know the rep of the shop, are they on Angie's list or anything like that. And as others have said, some kind of warranty is definitely required for that kind of dough...

Add another 3-4 hundies for warranty and tax and your at 1500. That's 1100 buck difference, not chump change. There is a nice 60 inch plasma in the FM for 650, Milwaukee area if your interested.

Buy at Costco - Automatic 2-year warranty, and the best prices I've seen.
