I tell you Rey, that's one fine cigar that even Cigar General Dave would highly endorse sir! Any other cigar aficionados here listen to The Cigar Dave Show on the radio? It's a great show if you haven't listened to it yet. ;)

Don't listen to General Dave but I'm a Brother of the Leaf as well, CAO LaTraviata and Brick House are great maduro offerings as well, I think Ashton, Romeo y Julieta, and LaGloria are all top shelf enjoyment. Some great Nicaraguan boutiques have come around, AJ Fernandez offerings LIke Man O War and Diesel...

Tho I've been spoiled last couple years, I smoke almost exclusively Cubans these days, strong but delish. The Partagas #4 is among my favorites, along with the classic Monte #2 - if you ever get the chance, hands down the best value in a Cuban is Ramon Allones, Specially Selected.

Padron= god among men in the cigar world, especially for the price. CAO's double maduro was fairly tasty, but I haven't had a cigar in years.

Padron is good, but for the price they can be hard to justify. I've had several anniversary editions with construction issues. With price tags between $25-$35 a cigar, they should be flawless.

especially when there are the likes of La Aroma Di Cuba (Mi Amor) and My Father - Flor De Las Antillas around. Less than half the price and seriously good smokes.

AJ's New World is also pretty darn good.

Check out Pete Johnsons stuff "Tatujuaje" I knew him when he was just the lowly buyer at the Grsnd Havana in Bevely Hills. He hooked up with Pepin and did some great stuff. I don't look much these days and have not seen them for a while but the "Avions" are sublime p

Gotta keep it simple and go with a 2000 or 3000 upstate. $4-5 in price and I'd always had a consistently good experience with Padrons. But I'm no longer active in the cigar world so things may have changed.

I like all those and would add Upmann Connoisseur #1 (cab).

Re: maduro, I'm with @afterburnt on the Padrons, but the only ones I have are Anniversarios from 15-20 years ago. They cost up to $4-7 back then (and I thought that was a lot). I guess I still have some 20 y/o LGC's from the old factory which are nicely aged, but I haven't tried in quite a while since I stick mainly with Cubans and I only enjoy one or two a month.

I just realized my supply of Cubans is getting very low now; and with Wal Baranow retired, I'm not sure where I should turn for resupply. Can anyone offer guidance?

Is funny so I am smokig the cigar in the patio. Daugther comes in and said why don't you go in the garage and enjoy music while smoking. That is why you set up the audio rig there!

    Got to love them.

Now smoking a nice cigar and listening Tool.

I usually don't smoke cigars in the $20+ range, couple of times a year.

But when I do, I expect something for the extra $. They do have flavor, I'll happily give them that, but burn issues and VERY delicate wrappers are just a PIA that ruin the experience...

Seriously, check out some of the Padron anniversary lines in a local shop, you're almost guaranteed to see several sitting in the box with cracked/split wrappers...

I have had the 2000 and 3000 series. Good flavors and I don't recall any serious burn issues. But even they can be north of $10-12/stick now in a local shop for me.

Don't get me wrong, I'll spend it. But I usually reach for something else that I like more, for the same price.

Nice wrapper and burn on that Pinolero.

I placed a couple orders overseas to test the waters again. Upmann 1, RASS, and Bolivar RC's. I'm really missing Wal Baranow. He always had some good deals. Other than those specials, prices look to be about the same as they were in '98-'99!

I was searching the web for info on Wal and other overseas vendors and came across my old posts in alt.smoker.cigars from '95-'98. That was hilarious to look back on. I also learned that one of the regulars there had ascended to CEO of Drew Estates. I had no idea - I had stopped following before Drew caught on so. Apparently, he retired from Drew and has returned with a new line of his own, Sobremesa . Might have to give that a try.

Yep, Saka. One thing that sticks out in my mind about him was one day he posed as his secretary and posted the sad news that he had died. I was actually quite shaken by that post. LOL

Don't think I've ever tried any Drew cigars. I did enjoy El Sublimado long ago that was infused with some spirit - brandy, cognac... I think I've still got a few of those somewhere. Wonder if they still have that amazing aroma?

I'm much happier with this one, I let this one "dry box" for the last month. I keep my dry box at about 64% RH. I have been experimenting with dry boxing cigars before smoking and I am seriously liking the results...

I keep my main humidor (converted wine cooler, "Wineador") at 69-70%. I use that one mainly for resting and aging.

That's a nice setup! I've never tried the dry boxing honestly, but I've read it's great. I have a bit of a junk yard setup, holding is in a 'Tupperdore" I lined with cedar from cigar boxes (and 71% humipacks) and one large 60's era humidor at 69% for resting pre-smoke. It's not perfect but would be better if I wasn't too lazy to rotate them!
