You know, the past couple days I've been thinking about the forum, the people on it and what it all means to me. I started coming around the forum about, oh, five years ago. I didn't know squat, didn't have squat and so forth. More than a couple of forum members, namely RuSsMan, hoosier, George, the Bros McGowan and others were kind enough to explain things to my dumb ****, offer me KILLER deals on gear that they could have sold for far larger profits and so forth just to help a guy out getting into this wacky hobby. For my part, I've tried to do the same.
As the years have gone by, I've forged some, what I consider, lifelong friendships with a lot of the guys on here. I've been welcomed in thier homes and they mine. I've shed real tears over the loss of a forum member, felt as if I'd lost one of my family. When I've been deployed overseas, members have sent me care packages with audio magazines, gear to use there and I'm proud to say that some of that gear and a Polk banner is flying in Bagdhad as I type this. I honestly view this forum as more than just a computer forum, I've said it before, it's much more personal than that.
When I see some of the things that I've seen occur here lately, I'm ashamed. We have one guy who left another forum member (who I consider a friend) holding the bag on a transaction and then accused him of trying to rip him off. This guy pops his head up again and what happens? Some people are willing to overlook that as long as it is to thier advantage. In another case, we've got another forum member who has passed along some tweeters to another forum member, at no charge. Lo and behold, what happens next is those tweeters are up for sale (or similar ones or whatever). Maybe I'm oversensitive, but that's just plain wrong. I'm sorry, but if you can afford a pair of 1.2tl's, you can afford to pass along things you got for free at no charge as well. But, ****, I guess it's all about 'what's in it for me'. I'm sorry, but if I did that, I'd be ashamed.
Look guys, all I'm trying to say is that the forum is no better than the people on it and it is what WE make of it. This is one of the BEST forms (and one of the few forms) of advertisement that Polk has. Let's look after each other. If all we do is see how much we can take out without putting anything back in, eventually, it will die. I hate to be fatalistic but some of the things that have gone down lately have really soured me on the forum and what bothers me more is that it doesn't seem to bother too many other folks as well.
I'm all for hosting the next Polkfest and will do so. However, I want to host an event that I can be proud of and host people that I'm PROUD to associate with. I want a bunch of guys who want to come out, demo gear, talk audio and so forth as a community effort. I do NOT want to host an event with a bunch of yo-yos who are there to see what they can get for free, what gear that they can practically steal from other forum members purely for thier own profit and so forth. As I organize this event keep that in mind as I want to host an event that we can be proud of. If that ticks some people off or what have you, tough crap. My house, my rules.
Well, that's it for now. I'm off my soapbox.

I still cant believe anyone would assume we are auctioning BLOWN tweeters.
So you mean 'we' meaning him.
Show him the post, I stand by EVERY word of it.
Would that be community as in, say, when you wanted someone with a perectly GOOD speaker to try and scam polk out of a free driver and send it to you?
Look, Trey, you may be a good kid and all and from the accounts of others, you are. Things that you and your dad are up to don't fly in my book.

If you want to be left alone about a certain topic, I have some advice for you.
DON'T BRING IT UP IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Troy, who knows, I'm hoping it's just growing pains as the forum gets larger everyday. Maybe it will smooth out, and settle down after a while longer. If it doesn't, well - we always tossed the idea around of starting up another forum.
Cheers,

Troy,
The Auction listing...my part in it
1) I made the auction, Dad edited it to his will
2) I told him the highest price they can go for, etc etc
That is it. The rest, he blew 3 tweeters. He ordered 2 Polk replacements. he took 2 freebies. He owns the 1.2. He sells the product. The only part I have in transactions and dealings ARE:
What I sell for myself and buy for myself...

This is one subject id like to entertain, alot of true words from Troy D,
However almost 5 months ago, things and me were getting out of hand on the board.. misunderstandings... fights, and it was to much for me to deal with at the time.. I left here and only read posts about a month ago until i started posting here again,
I came back to try and have a new start, brag about some cool new things i was doing in my rigs and new first 2 channel rig.. and sell a few things i didn't want to bother putting on e-bay and thought some members would like for next to nothing..
Honestly trying to put some back and start over fresh, weather my sarcasm is hard to read into or not..
I start getting crap from some key long time members rigth from the get go, so tell me what should i have done or felt??
I'm not playing victim, im not bitching, I like it here and plan to stay, and have made some people happy with the items ive sold, i even went over to spastics house and helped him and gave him a slab for his sub i sold him...
But it go's on all the time and this time i have choosen to try and ignore it as best i can,
so that's my take on it fwiwMY HT RIG:

Who tried to rip off the polk warrenty department by sending a blown tweeter to another forum member so that they could get it replaced under warranty for free?

Jdh,
You're right. I did try that. I didn't follow through with it either. Yet, the people considering helping me are not getting the snake eye now are they?
I paid for the tweeter, it turned out to not be the tweeter. So I sent it back and Ken greatfully sent me a free crossover. I sent the old crossover that needed repairs to Russ for him to use on whatever he wanted.
Not like no one on this forum has never done something wrong. Sheez, I didnt even follow through with it yet you're still here. Bringing it back up. What do you want me to do? Give everyone on the forum a pair of speakers?
Russ,
I didnt bring the 1.2, tweeter topic back up. The seller of the 1.2TL brought it back up after someone telling him I was running my mouth about him. Which of course, wasnt in the least bit true. I never said any bad words about the seller. I washed the car after replying, I came back, and you and several others had brought up the tweeters. Again though, no one lets stuff die.
Can't we just get along? Let the past be the past, turn over a new leaf? Sheez!
PS: BTW, I am sorry for the past actions I took in replacing the tweeter. I didn't follow through, the actions or thought displayed there have not shown again or will be shown again. Again, Sorry I am.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -

BDT, your words express why I'm here and I would be hard pressed to think thieves could take over the club. Its funny though how some folk can't appreciate the fun in something if there isn't a dollar associated with it.

Your right, I didn't single out anyone else from that "event" since:
A). The people I remember posting were telling you it was illegal
. I don't remember anyone accepting the offer.
Yes, there are people who do shady things all the time. From my observations around here, those who commit these acts tend to get beaten into banishment (Har) or redirected into doing the right thing (your case, hopefully you can do the same thing with your dad)
The reason people are jumping on you for the tweeter thing is that you are the forums best connection to your dad and they want him to do what they consider the "right" thing.
Why did I bring the old warranty tweeter thing up? Because you're trying to play the angel in the deal when the whole thing seemed a bit shady and you were doing the play by play. Also, it seems that the "I" became "we", which became "my dad".
Good for you for sending the X-over to Russ...

J,
I agree with you 100%. I am not playing the angel here, I am trying to get everyone off my back on something I have nothing to do with.
I know what I have done in the past, and I know what I have done now. I don't try to rip people off.
Like I said above, I think it is time ot turn over a new leaf.
The I, We, My Dad..
Ask yourself this...
My Dad purchases a Polk Audio SDA SRS 1.2TL off EBay.
My Dad blows 3 Polk Audio SL3000TL Tweeters.
My Dad accepts 2 free Polk Audio SL3000TL Tweeters.
My Dad buys a pair of Polk Audio replacement Tweeters for HIS Polk Audio SDA SRS 1.2TL.
My Dad then takes HIS tweeters out of HIS speakers to sell on ebay.
I showed him the auction of the 1.2TL on Ebay.
I was in the house when he blew the tweeters. I was not behind the controls.
I made a post about needing SL3000 tweets. Warlocks gave us 2 free ones, thank you Warlocks for the generosity. I wish my Dad was a tad more grateful.
I contacted Ken asking for a price, I gave me Dad the number, he called, ordered.
I told my Dad that at the rate he was going he would be better off to sell the tweeters in his speaker and buy replacements. So the people wanting SL3000's could have them and he wouldnt blow them all.
I told him the price in which they can go for.
He asked me to start an auction, the details to include, etc etc.
Here we are now. There is a We.
I am not perfect, as you mentioned above. I am sorry for messing up.- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
I thought the forum has been a fairly nice place to go after getting rid of of the last few loosers. Before that even it was MUCH worse. When I joined this forum there was yelling and screaming EVERY SINGLE DAY! It was madness! We haven't had a good knock down drag out fight for years... Troy - Excellent words, and a worthy thread to be posted.
I also consider the core Polk group that we have, you know who you are, to be the best group of people I have met in ages. I had the crew back me on plays and not even flinch, that's freaking brotherhood. I have had deals dropped in my lap, without any second thought, that's brotherhood. To have just joined this forum, last year, and solidify the relationships with the people that I have, is a very nice feeling.
I don't have much to add other than this forum could be great, but it won't be, and that is a little disheartening.
Jdh - Good words from you too sir.
Trey - You have brought every comment upon yourself. You started the threads, and the hundred or so others that followed thereafter. You used pronouns like, we, I, him, us...blah blah, don't blame bad choices in verbage on the forum. Do us a favor and just stop talking for 5 minutes. You asked us to give it a rest, why don't you.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Troy,
Finer words could not be spoken. I commend your observations and agree 100%.
Trey,
Let me explain something to you:
It was your membership to this forum that prompted Warlocks to send you the tweeters.
It was your crying about the blown tweeters that ...(see above)
The tweeters were sent as a courtesy to you, as the member, not your dad.
You are just showing the child you are to attempt to lay it off on your father, who by the way is showing less than admirable scruples...
The tweeters should be sent back to the man who was nice enough to provide them. You cried loud enough to have him offer them, I am sure you can cry loud enough to get your father to do the right thing.
Anthony R. Mulford -
Look, for the record, it isn't my intent to single out Sid and his dad or castigate anyone. Hell, I'm no saint myself. I'm responsible for more than a few flame wars and fueds.
My purpose is to lay out, what I think is a vision of what I and many others think the forum is and should be. Maybe give folks, outsiders and newcomers, an idea of what we want and expect.
As far as Trey and his dad goes, all I ask is, look at things from the perspective of some of us forum regulars. Anywhere else, sure, maybe taking some freebies and making a few bucks on them is ok. Here it isn't. Chalk it up to an innocent misunderstanding, fix it, and press. No need to make it any worse than it already is.
BDTI plan for the future. - F1Nut -
You are right. I'm not trying to castigate (good word by the way;) ) Trey. However, right is right.
I remember a fellow Polkie needed some coax for a home project, I sent him some 100 ft or so free, I asked he pay the shipping. He did, and was grateful. I was glad to help.
I agree with you that we need to look out for each other. People are generally **** up today, it is really nice to find a place where there are scruples similar to my own.
As far as Har goes, I saw his post. I saw Russ's warning. I choose not give THAT JERK OFF the energy of thought. -
Anthony,
I actually posted that before I read you post so it wasn't aimed at you amigo.....
I also just read madmax's post, I LIKE that one. Also, madmax is another one I owe, he sent me a videocamera in the desert so I could make tapes for the lovely Wendi. Now that I think of it, I need to make good MY end of that deal.......:o

BDTI plan for the future. - F1Nut -
Imo..Sid not bashing you or your dad for that matter, but I agree that the freebies should go back to whence they came. There are some out here that are in need of one and are having a devil of a time coming up with one, let alone one for zero. You need to have a one on one with dad and explain this whole situation in a nutshell and make the strong point of what the right thing is to do here. I believe also that it will keep you in the good graces of other forum members as well.
Another suggestion would be to just leave whatever it is that your dad is doing out of conversate entirely and stick to what good ol sid is up to instead, any info about dads items should be left up to dad and invite him to come here and post about if he wants...imo. But that should be after things have been rectified in regards to the sl matter. You seem to be a good egg, just don't want to see this one bit you in the ****, know what I mean?
Troy, has there been a date hashed out for the east coast gathering? Just curoius as I definantly plan to be there since the dirve is only about 4 hours or so from here."Its worked so far but we're not out yet."

Well, I've been around this forum for a little over two years...and thouroughly enjoy the daily banter..both good and bad. It really can be entertaining at times!
My personal rules for this forum are simple:
- Try to learn something about audio/video.
- Try to give Polk it's props whenever possble (They really deserve it!)
- Try to avoid "wars". I've had disagreements with a couple of folks and said my peace and then I'm done. In a case or two I have kept my word and not entered threads they are involved in.
- Avoid discussions with children. I have two teenagers that I have to deal with every day (plus their "friends" and boyfriends). Don't get me wrong...I love my girls and they have generally good friends. But they know everything about everything. Their opinions and "facts" change everytime the wind changes direction. And it all makes perfect sense to them. I don't need to get online for more of that aggrivation. Adults only please. (I also try to avoid adults that act like children!)
- Speak out when something is wrong. I will do it once (usually), say what I think and let it go. It may be an issue of something morally, ethically or legally wrong (IMO). My therory is that if I see something that I think is wrong and say nothing...then by my silence I have condoned the words or action...and that is wrong. I try not to preach...but even if no one cares...I have said something.
- Offer opinions and advice to help if I can.
- Try to make sure if something "IS MY OPINION" that I present it that way. Also respect the opinions of others (even if I don't agree).
- #1 - Enjoy the forum! If it is an agrivation, I'd rather be listening to music on the Polks. To this point it is still fun and I enjoy most of the guys here. I really look forward to meeting some of you folks at Troy's this fall. I WILL BE THERE!
Side note to Troy - When are you going back tp Iraq? I just found out that my brother-in-law who is a Chaplain with the Tennessee guard will be heading over there in a few months. Sounds like it will be a lengthy stay. He's a good guy (even if he did marry my sister), who knows...your paths may cross."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais
