SL 1700 & Denon DL 110 cart new addition

Just picked up from my tech my new (to me) SL 1700 and 110 MC cart. TT was disassembled and cleaned, caps replaced and all values checked. Full service done to TT as well as cartridges ( dl110 and shure v15lll/MR ) mounted and balanced. All ready to go for listening today. Cant wait to see (ERR hear) how much improvment a entry level MC Cartridge can provide. Should be interesting.

This came to the house last night "for babysitting 2 little dogs" for 3 weeks.
Cleaned it, reset the filter/timer and it does work. Picture is not the best but something to play around with.

Into the August garage sale pile it goes.

Wife suggested we use it once during our annual family fun night for the little ones to watch a movie outdoors.

Well the shure v15lll is as expected, plenty of bass punch, fast and dynamic. Mids rich smooth not to warm and very clean, highs are crisp well defined no suprises so far.

Ok here we go! The DENON... initially subtle difference in detail after time these grew to a faster bass far more detail between the different drum skins ( more detail and defination ) mids are "more accrate and live sounding, and the highs are even sharper and more present. Big surprise is the imaging and sound stage is very different. More separation in the instruments every insterment is more clearly defined and stands in it's own place in the room.the sound stage has moved around and can be more clearly pinpointed.the shure is no slouch in this area but the MC just "pronounces" (if you will) every note with more detail and presence. Not a huge day and night change but for critical listening just MORE of everything.will have to spent more ear time and pull out my half speed and original master recordings and evaluate them as well. Initial evavuation done with a mint Alan parsons "eye in the sky" record side one.

The 1700 is nice. Decent arm good motor ect. Really want a mkll version. Will find one someday. After several hours the denon seems to be getting even more impressive ( maybe needs to warm up? But it has been sitting for sometime according to the original owner. Have had a chance to throw a lot of different music at it and cant find any (so far) that it didn't handle well.dark side of the moon was particularly impressive. The guitar lead in money was jaw dropping.

The denon dl 110, 160 are excellent for the price. Difficult to beat for the cost. You would need to go up to Dynavector's 10x5 to start to get better in my opinion and better is subjective to the persons preference.

I am still running a 1200 for years with a dl160 cart and jolida phono pre.

I know some technics like the 1200 are not considered audiophile but, look for a utube video where this person puts it against several higher end turntables.
You can also get lots of performance upgrades from kab. No flipping belts to change speed either on that turntable.

To me that is a starting point for a cartridge upgrade but, some like the 110 a hair better and some like the 10x5 a hair better but, all agreed cost per what you get, unless you just want to burn 500+$, stick with the denon. They both used to be around the same price. Denon hasn't raised their price but Dynavector has. I would save the cash and put it to maybe fluid dampening or see what KAB has for your TT. I know for the 1200 they have a lot.

The Denon DL-110 used to be about $150-$160, but the price has gone up to $299 on Music Direct.

Needle Doctor has the DL-110 for $249

That's a significant increase in US price.

I'm not surprised the Shure V15 sounded good on the SL-1700 ? I have the same table and used the Shure V15 type IV cartridge with it. This combination sounds great , hooked up to my Sansui AU-717 Integrated amp.

  • It was great, great bass, punchy and detailed. Mids and highs were very good. Only prob was the dl 110 flat out out proformed it in all aspects. Ended up selling the shure keeping the denon.

  • I believe that Denon DL-110 can be used in a M/M Phono Preamp also. I may have to try that cartridge some day myself..

  • Yes it is a homc. I recomend it highly, a friend has a dl 301 and that got me interested in the denon. Once i heard it on my system i was done! Fantastic sound. Good enough to release the best sounding mm cart ive heard ie the shure v15lll mr. It was definitely a good step up in detail and dynamics. Will try the upper levels of the denon line when one comes around.

Try a Denon 103 or 103R. They are a great match for Technics tonearms. I have a SL 1200 and the best sounding carts I have had on it have all been from the 103 family. I also have a DL 160, and the 103 family is a big step up. I also have a Denon DL 303 which is in the 301's family. I think the 103 series is a better match for the Technics tonearm. The 3** likes a lighter tonearm. The 3** is more detailed than the 103 family overall, but lacks the slam, liveliness, and musicality of the 103.
  • The "slam" is one of the things i really like about the dl110! Bass just hits you in the chest like a hammer but is still very fast and mids and highs are detailed and crisp. Will pick up a 301 when one avails itself.
