Dither?

Anybody have experience with equipments that add dither to digital signals? People say that it gives a nice warm sound and bloom. Some of the most expensive CD players add dither and I know the Audio Alchemy DTI pro and pro 32 adds dither too.

I would imagine that any DAC that "up-samples" is using some sort of dithering scheme. A 16 bit encoded CD has only 16 bits...so additional data is being created (dithering) to get 24 bits, or whatever the sampling rate is...at least thats my understanding of dithering...

Thanks Steve. That makes sense. All the units I've seen that add dither have upsampling. I'm going to keep my eyes open for an AA DTI pro 32. I just read an article from a vinyl nut saying it makes CD's sound just like vinyl.
