Review: Advent Indoor/Outdoor speaker...
Advent Calypso indoor/outdoor speaker
Price:
approx $59.00 pr (see Ebay, free shipping too!)
Description:
2-way ported indoor/outdoor speaker supplied with mount brackets and hardware. Wide in the front, then tapers into almost a triangular shape at the rear, making corner placement easier. Cabinet is ABS or some sort of durable plastic. 5-way gold plated single wire binding posts. 5" woofer, 1" tweeter.
Build:
Appear to be very well built, heavy for their size. The binding posts are very impressive on a speaker of this cost/type. Supplied brackets are also very well made and use a "ball/socket" arrangement--all hardware needed is included.
Listening:
Very impressive bass response from such a small speaker. Highs are smooth and have that classic "Advent" character. Smooth transistion from woofer to tweeter makes for nice mid-range as well; a very non-fatiguing sound, even when pushed hard. This is the best sounding indoor/outdoor I've auditioned--most are seriously lacking in bass (as to be expected) but the front firing ports on this model seem to help bass output and efficiency.
Comments:
If your looking for indoor/outdoor speaker, definitely give these a listen, I'm about to buy another set for the bedroom system--they sound that good.

What are they rated for? What are you driving them with?
-
I installed a pair of those on my sis-in-laws back deck. They are a GREAT speaker, especially at the current market rate.
Cheers,

My curiosity is peaked...
I wanna build a small 2 ch rig in my boathouse. The speakers need to be outdoor build. -

50 watts/rms. A Yamaha receiver, 75 watt/rms can't think of the model number, VRX...something? They sound great huh? I'm really impressed. Best $59 bucks I've spent in awhile...Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 -
Thanks Steve, I'm gonna check these out.

Agreed. I have two pair of the Marbl IIs (which preceeded this model...I think I pair about 40 a pair) and they are a great little speaker, particularly for that price. I am pretty sure they have the same drivers as the Calypso, just a bit different cosmetically.
These were the reasons why I never hung my Atrium 45's outside and eventually sold them to Mark here on the forum...the Advents dig lower. And I'm all about some bass. I've had one pair outside now (they are under the roof overhang but still get some sun) for 2 1/2 years and they are still going strong. The black color is fading a bit, but they still sound great.
I just don't see spening 200 bucks or more for speakers that are gonna fry in the sun and get frozen and rained on.system 1:

I am constantly amazed at how good a small speaker can sound...that is a real neat Advent.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I was amazed with the quality of build. Very heavy, and very good quality binding post or such a cheap speaker.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2

My old Advents Marbls do not have the binding post (just spring clips), but you are right about the build quality. When I was hanging my pair in the garage I knocked one off of a 6' stepladder onto the concrete floor. It didn't crack, the woofer magnet didn't detach...no problems. I was amazed.system 1:

I'm terribly sorry to bump such an ancient post and i know its against forum etiquette but I'm wondering if anyone knows how to remove the grills from the fronts of these speakers.
Thanks in advance! -
I still have these, I attempted to remove the grills, no success--at least without damaging them. The Advents are going to do duty in my warehouse as soon as I fish the wires thru the walls.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2

thanks, i guess that's odd that they're not removable because they show the picture with them off and if they were removable you could get to the screws to service the insides.. but i guess at that price point they want you to buy new ones!
