Gregg Allman solo better than the Bros?

Old friend of mine likes his solo stuff even better than the band. Is anyone here into his solo stuff and if so what do you like?

I have at least one solo LP maybe more. If you play vinyl i could loan it to you to give a listen. I know I have his latest solo LP but I could look for others in my well organized stacks. PM me if you want to give it a try

@dromunds thanks man that is a nice gesture. I can listen to some of his stuff on my laptop from Amazon Prime but I am spoiled so it all sounds unlistenable through my .25" Harmon Kardon speakers. I am a big Allman Bros. fan and I think that they were one of the greatest bands of all time. I really just wanted to know if anyone was of the same mind as my buddy. Tell me what is your opinion of his solo work?

I too love the Allman Bros, the original lineup more than the various iterations after Berry and Duane were killed. I haven't heard alot of his solo stuff, but what I have heard was underwhelming.

I concur Drumim, compared to the original lineup, not even in the same league.
The best way to predict the future is to invent it.

Not a whole lot of material. Laid Back and Playin' Up a Storm are great albums IMO. Excellent jazzy, soulful, blues-pop more focused on songwriting, singing, piano, horns than guitar jam of ABB. The 2 eighties albums are so overproduced that I have a hard time listening to them. Searching for Simplicity is more ABB-like and excellent, maybe his best. Best place to start if you like ABB.

I really like Low Country Blues (2011). Produced by T-Bone Burnett. More rootsy production, almost no organ or drums (kick and hands mainly?). Multiple guitars, steel, prominent bass, piano, all well played; bluesy horns thrown in to the mix. He's wanting to do another with T-Bone.

I saw him a few years ago at Kure Beach Blues Fest and it was fantastic. He was healthy again and feeling his oats. Jaimoe and the very Allman-like keyboardist from Jaimoe's band joined him with a very skilled lead guitarist from NYC (don't remember his name), bass, second drummer, and 2 horns. Gregg played acoustic on 3 or 4 songs. In my mind, that show is up there with some of the better ABB sets. I have tix to see him in Cary with the Doobies. Not sure what to expect there, but it will be interesting. They are also headlining a new music festival in NY - Laid Back MF, I think.

@dromunds man I don't want to be responsible for your LP's. You see how I take care of my stuff lol. Besides the UPS truck is a cruel place in So Cal in the summer.

I'm not that concerned about it, but no problem. Anyway, like some of the others above, I prefer the original ABB lineup.

Don't get me wrong I appreciate such a gracious offer but I would hate to tell you that the albums got here looking like ruffles potato chips

Yeah, no big deal. If you change your mind let me know, we do that kind of whacky stuff around here. Sometimes the dragon wins, most of the time they arrive safe and sound.

I don't think you can ever replace the original line up and it is hard to get rid of that expectation.; That said, I have "Hittin' the Note" and it is pretty decent in its own and even better when I stop comparing to original band.

I have the same issue with Yes with out Jon Anderson, though "Fly From Here" has grown on me in a very good way and I really enjoy that album. Their latest album "Heaven& Earth" hasn't yet.

I won't even listen to Yes without Jon Anderson. Lol. Fraudulent Yes, as one of my buddies says.

Solo Greg while good don't come close to the Bro's. When Drama from Yes first came out I didn't even know Jon was missing, call it fraudulent Yes if you will but I really enjoy that one, the last two Yes releases I don't care for at all.

Saw yes about 5 years ago . I was disappointed to see David Benoit instead of Jon. George Lopez was in the audience calling David a ****.

I lost interest in Yes when Bill Bruford left the band. He had such imagination and taste and helped to propel their songs to unexpected places (eg "Roundabout", "Starship Trooper", Close to the Edge, Time And A Word). Alan White is more of a straight ahead rock guy. I like what Alan White does for more conventional music, but Yes was anything but conventional.
