Lost Our 4-Legged Boy This Weekend

My wife and I faced a difficult and unexpected decision when we had to have Scuba, our family dog and first 'child' put down late Friday night. A black lab who had been a part of our family for almost exactly 14 years, he showed EVERYONE he met unconditional love.

Although we new his time was limited, our only regret was not spending more time with him last week. The overwhelming grief we are experiencing now is far outweighed by all of the joy and happiness he brought us throughout his life. We'll miss him dearly... :'(

So very sorry to hear of your loss scubalab. I have had so_ many friend's over the past 4 or 5 decades who have owned black labs and all were of the utmost loyal and noble breed of dogs. Your Scuba looked magnificent . I will pray for your family during this most difficult time.

It's been 4.5 years since we had to put down Mugsey or "Brown Dog" as I called her. She was about the same size as Scuba it appears and she thought she was people, always wanting to sit on your lap.

What helped us was the funny stories.
Everytime we would have steak, ole brown dog would stare at me sitting at the table, I would look at her real fast and she would always turn her head away, which she did over and over again. This was a normal routine during most cookouts.

She also "begged" for a sip of beer "compliments from my brother in-law Chuck" for getting her taste buds activated to the taste of a cold one.

If I can find the pictures, she would wear those big clown shaped sunglasses and actually keep them on her head while she waited for a "sip".

    Sorry for your loss....

I am so so sorry. We lost our black lab last Aug. and I'm still feeling the loss of my Shadow. I wish I had something to ease your pain. There's nothing in the world like love and friendship a dog gives us and I don't have to worry as "All Dogs Go To Heaven" and we will all meet again.

So very sorry for your loss of handsome Scuba. :'( He seems to have been one wonderful pal to you. Allow yourselves to grieve his loss. The sad times like these you are experiencing will pass and hopefully soon, your tears and sorrow will turn into smiles and laughter when you think of him and the funny things he did that used to p1$$ you off. :)

No regrets...he knew you had unconditional love for him and that if you could have spent more time with him, you would have.

There's lots of strength to be found in that Dog's Prayer posted above by Mikey. Read it from time to time, it'll help.

    Good luck.

So sorry and I know the pain. Dogs are family here at my place and losing one of them last year was very sad.. Even the other furry family members were looking and acting sad. Your baby was a beautiful fury person!!

Sorry for your loss. I know exactly how empty the house feels when they are gone. We had to have our dachshund "Lucy Lou" put to sleep 2 weeks ago, the day before her 13th birthday, and we are still in pain. But at least she no longer is.

What a tremendous show of support from all of you! Thank you all so much for the condolences, support, and stories of your 4-legged family members. It is helping so much. I wish I could thank each and every one of you personally. Just know that I did read every one of these responses and appreciate every single one of them. Special thanks to Mikey for posting the Dog's Prayer... I am man enough to admit that it made me cry... again.

For all of you who've gone through or are facing something similar, you have my heartfelt condolences.

So sorry for your loss. I lost my wife 9 years ago. Our dog in now pushing 15 years old. The hospital even allowed him to visit her a couple days prior to her passing. I know when he goes I will be devastated, as will my grown children. Our dogs are an emotional link to our past as well as the present.

    RIP Scuba.

Figured I'd re-post my dog(s) pictures from this thread.

Dogs are the best friends and the perfect examples of unconditional love IMHO.

Fox was purchased with someone who will not be named  from a pet shop in the local mall. He was not planned, he just kinda happened (and thats ok since he's a dog, and not a baby ). He has always been my dog from the start even though he was mutually picked.

Chewey was purchased because I thought Fox needed a friend and well, I kinda always wanted a second dog. Chewey is my wifes dog so she got to pick him out. We got him from a rescue who saved him from a kill shelter. They say dogs take the personality of their owners... and they are right in both these cases.
