No doubt any speaker can benefit from what a good amp offers, but everything has it's limits too. Amping up Monitor 40's will gain you some added clarity and dynamics but it isn't going to turn them into B&W 805's.
Heard those speakers a few months ago and TOTL Mac gear and wasn't impressed at all. My Totem Hawks smash them in every area but scale. The Sonus Faber speakers next to them sounded much better and were half the price IIRC.
Anyway heh.

Im going to Jack the thread a bit, but I wouldn't be using the monitor40s if you don't have to. These inexpensive Fluance bookies are absolutely stunning in terms of musicality.

Paired with the Onkyo integrated they are flat out better then any of the monitor series I have owned, which is all of them except the 60's. I bet they would make a great bedroom bookie paired with the xpa. I brought my rti6's up from the ht , to compare and it wasn't even fair. The Fluance bookies are Damn good. Sorry Polk, but the bar has been raised, for budget speakers, well above the performance of the comparable Polks.
Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. What I am tryin to say is, is that the course of your life, well its changing, and you don't even see it- Forest Bondurant -
Jeremy I have some 60's that will end up in the bedroom as fronts the 40's will move to the back . That is whenever I get some Lsim's.

OP isn't trying to set up a great system, he just asked a curious question because he has extra gear that he's going to pair together "because thexpa3 is moving to the bedroom and that's all the speakers I have there, for now." I predict the 40's will sound with an amp than with an AVR. Will they all of a sudden become great speakers? Of course not, but they very well may become better speakers.Things work out best for those who make the best of the way things work out.-John Wooden
