kick panels vs. door pods?

what's the difference b/w 'door pods' and 'kick panels'? i thought door pods replaced the kick panels at the base of the doors.

    door pods go on the door, and kick panels go on the area in front of the door at the floor... like next to your foot if you are the driver.
