Might need hlp w/ Sony processor

You guys already know the story of Pumpkinman coming over and gifting a Sony TA-ES2000ESD Surround Processor to me. Please don't think I'm being ungrateful here but I need to know how if possible I can more out of this device. First off it's running warm not clipping hot but certainly warmer than my Onkyos or my beloved NAD 1020A. I d/l the PDF copy of the owner's manual and it's making my head spin. At first because it was in surround it sounded terrible, very echoey, then I went into source direct. I called Bill and said he used it so long ago that's what he did. Now when I play LPs I REALLY have to crank this thing to obscene levels. Is it just inherent in this device or am I doing something wrong w/ the program ? Right now all inputs are working as they should only just doesn't have the balls as the other Pres I owned did. Also my Onkyo P3150v definitely has 1 channel out so there's no joy there. It also doesn't matter what set of speakers I run, same result, plays fine just w/o the power I'm used to. Here's the review and copy if interested.
