New Camera Help - Nikon D70S
Nightfall

Hoping somebody can give me some guidance with this thing. There are so many buttons and menus everywhere. Like what is VR? I can turn VR off and on from the side of the lens. I assume AF is auto focus or is it auto flash? Also on the side of the lens. How do I turn the flash off? I'm getting bright white spots in the middle of my pictures because of the flash. The more automatic and just point and shoot, for me, the better. Any help at all or a link to somewhere would be appreciated. Some pictures just messing around, had the dial on "auto".

The flash is on top, built into the camera. When I press the "take a picture" button half way to let it focus it automatically flips up.
No manual. Just the camera body, carrying case, and a Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G VR Lens. Also says on the bottom "DX SWM VR Aspherical infinity-0.28m/0.92ft".
If you can't tell by my vocabulary, I have no idea what I'm doing. I just wanted to be able to take decent pictures and he sold it to me for a good price.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

When I got my Sony DSLR I found a for dummies book for my specific model, bought it and read it and it really simplified it for me...

The simple way, push the button half way and when the flash pops up push it back down.

If pushing the flash down still pops it back up, switch to P program and then it should stay down...but will probably use a slower shutter speed so a tripod maybe needed to keep from motion blur... if needed add some light to the subject preferably some nature light really helps .2 ch- Polk CRS+ * Vincent SA-31MK Preamp * Vincent Sp-331 Amp * Marantz SA8005 SACD * Project Xperience Classic TT * Sumiko Blue Point #2 MC cartridge

Congrats - that's a great camera - same as the one I have and I've enjoyed mine. Get the dummies book, it's a good start. Honestly, for probably $100 around here, you can take a Nikon Familiarization class - it's an amazing help in learning your controls if the manual ends up being chinese to you.VA HT HK AVR20II, Sony S9000ES CD/DVD/SACD, Polk Audio RC80i / Polk Audio CSi3, 60" Panasonic Plasma, Nordost / Signal Cable A2 / Wireworld / Pangea / Magic Power

There should be a "no flash" selection on the mode selector knob (styled like a "real camera" shutter speed dial on most DSLRs). You probably know that by now :- )
I didn't read through this whole thread (I am - ahem - on a teleconference at the moment!); if you didn't get a link to the manual yet, here's one:
