Nice find today: Anybody heard of Ashley Kahn, jazz critic, historian, etc.?

A stroke of luck today: My daughter (the violinist in NJ) stumbled on to a garage sale at the home of Ashley Kahn, a noted jazz recording critic, historian, producer, author, and adjunct professor at NYU.

For $20.00 she picked up 20 CDs from his collection (probably mostly comp copies sent to him for reviews).

When she got home, she called me to tell -- i.e., "gloat" -- about her find.

I asked, "How many CDs were in the sale and how many were left?"

She answered, "Two-sets-of-shelves full --probably close to 1,000 CDs."

I said, "Go back and make an offer for all of them -- no more than $0.50 each."

She went back, offered $350.00 for the lot, and ended up with 700 +/- CDs AND the two shelving units that held them for $375.00.

She reported back that there were lots of BB King, Louis Armstrong, Dizzie Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Elvis Presley (?), etc.

I can't wait to sift and sort the lot! :)

Here's a link to the Wikipedia bio of Ashley Kahn: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashley_Kahn

    Thanks, vmaxer and Polkie2009.

My daughter and her husband are coming to our house for the 4th, so I'll get a chance to sort through the lot of CDs.

I figure that if one CD out of 10 is a keeper, I did pretty well -- especially because I can put to good use the shelving units that came with them.

My daughter arrived from New Jersey late yesterday with her SUV's trunk filled with the CDs she purchased for me.

Here's a picture of the "spoils":

    y9k4bovahx3u.jpg

The box at the top looks smaller than the others because of the wide-angle lens, but it is actually larger than it looks. She filled it with CDs while it was in her trunk, and we couldn't lift it out without unpacking about half its contents.

I haven't counted the CDs, yet. We've been too busy listening, and so far we're very happy with the purchase. Lots of good stuff, much of which is totally new to me, and I've hardly begun unpacking and looking at them. Ashley Kahn obviously received a lot of albums as complimentary copies for review. Many have never been opened.

A couple of favorites so far:

"New York for Lovers" -- a compilation of tracks by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, Stan Getz, Morgan King, Mark Whitfield, Sarah Vaughan, Ben Webster, Mel Tormé, Illinois Jacquet, Matt Dennis, Sonny Rollins, and Blossom Dearie.

"Tales from the Hudson" -- Michael Brecker with various other artists.

I'm thinking I did all right with this roll of this dice! :)

My daughter calculates that I should be able to listen to them all in about a year at my normal pace of listening.

Very, very nice, great to have a daughter that's on the lookout for dad. Jazz is always good to find, especially in bulk at a great price. Let us know about the good ones you discover. I recently picked up a Verve "Quiet Now" series CD of Ben Webster "Until Tonight". I'll be looking for more from this series.

A lot of seriously great music there Moose, too bad we didn't have blu ray or dvd technology back then. They must have sounded stellar in concert back then. There are__ a few clips or movies scenes recorded on film of the greats of the big band era. Some clips are better than others, but all are very special.

    Thanks, guys.

Listening to Branford Marsalis's "The Steep Anthology" -- a very nice album by Wynton's brother Branford -- with which I was totally unfamiliar. In fact, I didn't know anything about Branford.

Looks like I may be able to recoup my total outlay for these CDs simply by selling the three Genesis boxed sets you can see above in the picture of the "garage-sale booty."

I saw these Genesis boxed sets for sale on Amazon, new or used, for more in aggregate than I spent for the entire lot of about 1,000 CDs, and Genesis is not "my cup of tea."

There are many great albums in this collection, which includes many albums Ashley Kahn had received as comp copies for review -- some are even signed by the recording artists.

So far I've really enjoyed listening to The Bad Plus, Cassandra Wilson, Jane Monheit, and Michael Brecker.

My daughter and I are having great fun listening to new tunes (for us) and cataloging everything as we go!

This has become a real musical adventure for me! :)

    afterburnt,

Thank you for the great suggestion. My wife and I just listened to "Abacab" from the boxed set of the 1976-1982 recordings.

It is definitely a keeper. Rather than sell it to recoup my outlay, I'm happy to have acquired it for a steal of a price.

Many thanks. Without your advice, I might have sold this simply because it is not my usual preference in music.

Live and learn. Perhaps, on old dog CAN learn new tricks.

An update, which I posted in another thread in reply to a question from a fellow Polkie:

So far I've listened to 147 of the CDs purchased.

I sorted out about 300 that I thought I would like. So, I'm about half way through those.

Of the 147 I would say that about two thirds are CDs that my wife and I shall return to often. About 15 are ones that we may never listen to again. The reminder are ones that I shall likely listen to on occasion, but not often.

As we listen to them, we're rating them on a 1-5 scale, with 5s being ones that will be on our all-time favorites list. My wife heard one -- "West of 5th" by Hank Jones, Christian McBride, and Jimmy Cobb -- that she wanted to rate a "6."

We are definitely pleased with our purchase, which when the two sets of Boltz shelves are considered, has already proven to be a bargain.

For me it has been a great experience because I'm listening to a lot of good and great music and musicians that I would likely never have turned to on my own.
