Wood Box Repair Project

Well tonight i started my DIY wood box repair project. I took top off. Lightly sanded it down. Applied Wood Stainable wood puddy & lightly sanded down the lite scratched spots & it looked like the 1 bad spot might need more time to dry. So i should be able to finish sanding tomorrow after work... I plan on putting 3 coats of stain down & then apply 3 coats of Poly down for a clear coat shiny look... Overall it isnt going to cost much as i have alot of the material-so thats a big plus..
I have done many of wood boxes & with good results. Most were not as bad as this one. It has a small/fair size ding on left rear. I plan on using a stain a tad bit darker. The Stainable puddy is all new to me. Has anyone else done this before ? And what were the results ?

You'll never get the putty area to match using stain. There are ways to do it, but it involves buying a lot of touch up stuff and a level of skill.
Why 3 coats of pigmented wiping stain? You might get it a bit darker with 2 coats, but after that it's pointless.
May I suggest using a satin sheen instead of gloss. Gloss without being rubbed out never looks good where as satin does.

I got quite a selection & its about as close as i can get. I know the darker i go it will show up more. I will see what it looks like after 2. I usually only have to do it once. I can go see what else is out there for other ending touches. Thank you for the tips..

Also i tried something alittle different. I layed down wax paper & took some of the original top layer dust & mixed it with the puddy. That may help it match a tad better. Im aware with a ding that deep it may show up. With a 40+ y/o box im not going to complain about a few battle scares here n there. I wanted to be able to save the original stickers on sides. That didnt happen..

Well i ended up going with black poly stain & clear coat. The repair showed up through as i expected. Overall im pleased with the outcome as there will be stuff on top of it. Pictured not completely dry. It will set for a few days..

Very nice. I need one of those for an old Akai RTR,,,

Akai makes very nice R2R's. The Akai receivers are very under the radar. They sound very good on Monitor Polks..

I have a set of 5jr's that I want to use. Working a "hopeful" trade for an Akai amp, will know in a few days.

Good luck hope it works out. Look on the bay. The prices are very good to your doorstep. Yup little Akai's sound very good on P Monitors. I have tried it on 7 & 5jrs & sound sweet. Nice vintage receivers/amps for sure. I got a friend who sold off his little amp&tuner it was such a sweet looking set up & he had all he could do to move it. Sad thing is it sounded very nice & people are so locked on Marantz Pioneer..... Igot the Sansui above for 25.00. Its ugly as shat & box was banged up alittle. Little elbow grease & walla. I dont want it to look brand new. Its 40+ years old..
