I mean literally. I just picked up a 535 amp off of eBay. The description said it works and cosmetically 100% which it is, but the seller didn't mention the smell of smoke..

Holy cow does this amp smell like a Marlboro factory..

is there anyway I can clean it up or do I need the odor to subside with time?

I purchased a pair of MIT interconnects off eBay good deal excellent shape looked new but the package they came in litterly reeked of smoked so did the cables. I wipped down the cables with a cloth damp not wet with Windex let dry and several nights when the weather was nice hung them on the deck to air out, did this a few times and the smell eventually went away, here are some pretty good suggestions on the above link.Good luck nothing worse than stuff smelling like an ashtray.

That is a tough smell to get rid of in an older unit. I had a vintage Pioneer that reeked, opened it up, cleaned up what I could, compressed air, etc. Then I let it sit for a looongggg time, you can still smell the smoke if you get close enough. lol It was another era back then when the Malboro Man was the MAN! Maybe others will chime in with better suggestions?

  • If nothing else works, rent or borrow a small "ozone" generating machine. Amazing.
I have used to get cigarette smoke out of a fabric motorcycle jacket, car, house etc.
Put the amp in a powder room, or a closet with the ozone machine, shut the door and let it run for a day or so.
They even use these ozone machines to get that awful (and possibly incriminating) "dead body smell" out of cars, hotel rooms, houses.
