I knew I had joined up for a reason. It took a while to find a pair, but I finally did and just look at them! One of the woofers is dead, but luckily they still have a bunch of new ones in stock. So for $19.99 and the price of the new woof, they will be singing once again very soon. I'm just not sure if they are 4 or 4.5 models. I get conflicting info one saying 4 was sealed and 4.5 ported, then others saying both were ported and it depends on the tweeter. Build date is 1990. I can't believe they survived GW in such intact shape!

Never mind! Serial number starts with M4 so they must be M4. Very cool. The one that works sounds much nicer than I thought. Can't wait to hear them together.

I want to say all Monitor 4's are ported.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

After cleaning them up and getting a look inside I'm worried I may now be spending a lot of time trolling for. Vintage PolK. This is looking bad because these little guys are so surprisingly good!
-
Dont hesitate to get those up n running. I have a pair of 4's series2's & they are a great speaker. Polk stocks the driver & if you ever need a tweeter they are available on the bay cheap.... They will last years if properly used..

If you go through Polk. Call & tell them your a forum member & get a great discount. Welcome to the forum. Stick around & enjoy your Polks & dont hesitate to bs about other things. Great bunch of guys/gals here..

I found a used one on the Bay. I may still get two new ones, but first I'm going to address the caps on the crossovers. Anyone know if there's a source for "real" connectors? Those spring loaded things are killing me, not to mention one of them has the little plastic clips missing. And some idiot (looks around with a guilty countenance) kind of broke the other one when he was removing the bad woofer...when I catch that guy.... I tell ya....

I just redid a pair of Monitor 4 Series II and they are *much* better after swapping out those tiny electrolytic caps and double stacked 2ohm cermet resistors. I hate those spring clips too, so I swapped them out for these from Parts Express:
Round Speaker Terminal Cup 2-7/8" Gold Banana Binding Post
Part # 260-283
Don't let the fact that they are round instead of square deter you. They fit the 2" diameter hole cut in the cabinet perfectly and the screw holes even line up. Replacement couldn't be easier. You will have a problem with the fact that the XO board was soldered right to the spring clips. I decided to go with new components all around from Parts Express (a close-enough inductor was even in stock) and wired them up point-to-point.
I'll attach pics of the old and new, so you can double check to see if we're talking about the same animals.

Thank you for the help! If I can desolder everything cleanly from the original board I will hot glue it somewhere in the cabinet. If not, it seems easy enough to do the point to point thing. I built a pair of Bottlehead Paramours and a Foreplay so a little point to point is no big deal,. Thanks for the pics too!
-
No problem. The XO's are very simple as you can see so point to point is easy if you end up going that route. The original schematics are here on the site in the non-SDA sticky by dorokusai, and I could scan in a drawing I made to help me lay it out if you decide to do that. The hot glue thing would surely work, and the point to point board pictured above was actually mounted first with just industrial Velcro. That stuff'll pretty much hold anything, but I added the screw out of an abundance of caution to keep the board from vibrating at all.
The Jantzen inductor doesn't sound bad, but if anything the speakers now sound overly tubby in the bass. If I had it to do over again I'd keep the stock inductor. The caps and crappy resistors definitely should get replaced though. I was surprised at how much different the tweeters sounded after. Have fun! -
I just noticed you used the 5.6 value vs the original 5.8 MFD which is proving to be a difficult value to find. Is this what most people are using? The much more expensive audiophile caps can be had in the exact value but I'm not sure if I want to spring for the cash. I guess if you are happy with the sound, I can give it a shot too.
-
Most people feel that 5.6 is close enough since it's within the +/- 10% spec'd. (It's only about 3% off.) I've used both 5.6 and 6.0 in different speakers in place of the 5.8's before Sonic Craft started keeping that value in stock. I've found that I like the 5.6's better than 6.0, and it seems to be the value most people use if they're not using Sonics. I've even seen folks go with 5.6 on other higher end caps like Clarity when the 5.8 value isn't available. In the case of my Monitor 4 S2's all I can say is they sound noticeably better with the Dayton poly caps than the original tiny electro caps. For this application I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the 5.6 caps.

This forum is AWESOME. Thank you for the info! The parts are actually here now. I'll do a little photo essay once I start.
