I was enjoying some weathered albums now and then on a pure junk Kenwood. I was probably wasting what was left of those 33and thirds. Anyway if I can find a top shelf for a decnt TT I Can plug it to this Yami...

Hard to tell what you're asking? TT? Or shelf? If TT? New or Vintage? And budget for it?Currently orbiting Bowie's Blackstar.!

Look at the Pro-ject Debut Carbon. Hard to beat for $399. Rega RP-1 would be another excellent budget table.Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2

find a used and not abused Technics SL-BD20 (or any of its kin) at a garage sale. Pay $20 or so and it will get the job done, albeit with absolutely no style.
KAB sells 'em rehab'bed for rather ridiculous sums --

Almost all plastic... but they're really not bad, and there's absolutely no demand for them in most of the world, so they're ridiculously cheap, even in today's slap-happy 'vinyl revival' fad era.

That was about as clear as mud. I want a decent cheap TT.

New or vintage?
You've currently got one suggestion for each (well, two new - i.e., current production suggestions).

The new Denon is supposed to be decent for the money. Upgrading the cartridge brings big benefits.
which one? this one?

should I look for a USB TT for ripping albums?

Use an outboard DAC (you will also need a phono preamp, of course) or just take an EQd and preamplified analog signal into a soundcard.

So are you saying you consider a $400 Teac TT cheap? Because I don't. There are any number of suggestions above well under that price which would probably be as good, maybe even better. I think mhardy has you covered, myself! But if that's in your budget, that's fine. But I'd probably consider Mike's suggestion (Keiko) above first because that table seems fairly indestructible and will last you a long time!Currently orbiting Bowie's Blackstar.!

Screw it, I just dont want to go from bad to bad. I have a nice vinyl collection and I would like to play them on something that isnt runing them. I think I am ok with the junk that I have. I should probably order a disk washer and call it a day.

Sorry it is like 97 degrees and 97 percent humidity. I have that not so fresh feeling lol. Anyway if I dont get a pretty darned good TT it will be like why bother. The LP's can stay in the bunker for the last generation.

Awhile back i owned the Audio Technica ATPL-120 which is alot like the one Mike shown above & i really enjoyed it. I see they are around 249.xx on the bay & i think they are worth every penny. Onboard amp if needed & ready to rip to pc. I never upgraded the styus or cart & it was a outstanding unit...... Years ago i ran a Technics slbd22 & for 40-60.00 another outstanding budget unit used like Mark stated. I bet that thing is still going strong today.... Im running a Technics sl1300 now & it does everything i like & i really enjoy vinyl & great budget tt & upgrades arent breaking the wallet. Good luck on your search...

in the olden days, it was good sport to hook the earphone output of a (decent-quality, ideally AM-FM) pocket/transistor radio of the day to a Klipschorn (or an Altec Voice of the Theatre, which is more to my own liking nowadays). Such an experiment just might re-calibrate one's expectations.
... but I digress...

Strangely enough, my first real system used the AM/FM section of a smallish AIWA boombox that had RCA L/R outs into a low power Pioneer integrated amp and some dbPlus 440 speakers (Canadian). Since I was living in NYC and the AIWA had a decent tuner, well, I was pleasantly surprised.

I too was in NYC when I first heard FM radio on a good system. I never knew they broadcast such a high quality signal. I though all of the hiss pop and crackle was part of the transmission lol

No, this one is junk. It's the Playskool model. It made of plastic, the stylus is probably plastic.
