Yes you can hook your pre to the receiver in and use the pre as a pre and the receiver as an amplifier.

When I've done this on a NAD receiver, the volume controls did not affect the output when I connected to the Main in jacks. I guess it could be different depending on brand, but it would seem logical that the volume controls would be on the pre-amp "side" of the receiver.

Same here, actually any controls on the receiver outside of the power power button it bypassed and acted like a true amp.

Ok. I hooked it to the Main In on a old Sansui Model 8. It doesnt mater where the volume is on the receiver. It is all the way off & im operating volume on preamp. So far my cleaning of the preamp is good. Gonna listen to it for a hour or two..... I had to take bottom of Denon pra1200 preamp off to clean the knobs that are in the closed door (when your looking at front of unit-it has a door that hides controls) so we will see..... What was happening is (when hooked up to POA amp is-it would play perfect & once in while it would distort nust enough to P Me off. It has some knob on back of PRA unit & maybe dust got in there ??? Im pretty sure i cleaned it up a couple of years ago. I should keep better records of what i do. 50+ sucks. Cant remember shat

maybe the signal going in is too hot for it?
