Marantz 2385

Talk about being at the right place at the right time.

Just got back from a cousins house "the cousin eddie" type we all seem to have.

Apparently, he was at some ladies house for a high school graduation celebration thing and noticed a receiver sitting on a shelf covered in dust. Yes it was a 2385.

He ask about it and she said it's was her ex boyfriends and he hasn't been around for about 2 years. The conversation ended with this lady saying, just take it if you want it.

Evidently, it was the ex-boyfriends, Dads receiver he bought in Germany at a PX. It has a few lights out, missing one knob and in need of some serious cleaning and deoxit. It did power up.

Man what are the odds.

Congrats. That's a nice unit rarely had at a decent price, let alone FREE!

Get some vintage Polks on that, great synergy!

    Enjoy!

Eh, depending on the music he likes might be a good idea lol. Nothing wrong with Cerwins as long as they realize there are better out there

I have a 2385 in very nice condition.... Clean it up... test it out and you have something very classic and very desirable should you decide to sell it. Mine came from an estate sale with a wood case and it catches the eye and ear of everyone who sees/hears it. It has plenty of vintage power and great tone. Post some pics when you get the chance .. Congrats on a nice piece of vintage hi fi.

I wish it was mine but sadly no. He'll never sell it and I doubt it will get the few repairs it needs. This one does not have the wood case nor does it have the Dolby feature.

    Must be a nice receiver....

$2,150...seem out of line eh? (take away 20% if your in the USA...)

A lot of the pricing on monster class receivers has increased almost exponentially since the rise of the vintage collector and connoisseur. What would have been a few hundred or less a number of years ago is now commanding top dollar and the Marantz line is one of the very WORST when it comes to inflated pricing. Look at the prices on TOTL Pioneers also-close to the above for the SX-1250 ($1500+) and the TOTL SX-1980 much MORE than that (currently on ebay, an SX-1980 for $3899 buy it now!)

I couldn't agree more on the pricing of those things being way over what they should be. But if I've learned one thing in this room, patience usually pays off and someday I will find one that is a deal.

I guess if you want to buy one then they are overpriced... But if you have one then you may think just the opposite.

I put some work and some TLC into mine and it's nice to see the price do well. I'm not selling it but it's nice to know that it's worth something.

When I found mine it was a good deal.

I think that line of thought is universal on the whole what one hopes to buy something for and then what increase of value it might grow to.

Now I do kind of blame you for this pursuit of a 2385 after seeing some of your pics of the one you got... :# I can't even imagine the fun you have with it, let alone how good that bad boy looks.... B)

I'm trying to locate one, my wife keeps saying "patience" grasshopper.
I tell her I'm old, I don't have to be patient. :D which usually gets me that "rolled eyes" look...
