Opinions on PS4 as Bluray Player?

My Pioneer BDP-320 has stopped working. It no longer reads blurays. Still works for DVD's. This is the second 320 that has done this. So, thinking of getting a PS4 for gaming and to use as a bluray player. In my opinion, the Pioneer 320 performed much better than my old first generation PS3 for blurays. Any opinions on the new PS4's bluray performance?

  • I think it works just fine. I used to use my PS3 until upgrading to PS4. People have complained the controls are different but honestly if you are watching a movie you don't need the controller.

You don't need the controller with the PS3 either, if you buy the relatively cheap Sony remote control for Blu-ray access.

Not sure how the two units compare. But I'd be interested in anyone who has had both and given them a "critical" eye!

Mufs, your first gen PS3 was the thick one right? I know the slim PS3's were considered a decent blu ray machine. The only problem I noticed on my slim PS3( as well as other Sony blu ray machines) was it wouldn't play some BBC blu rays , but apparently Sony has fixed that problem for the PS4. Just a heads up, heard that the PS4 will have a price reduction ( $50.00 off?) coming soon. I'm thinking of finally picking one up myself.

Speaking of the PS4 I just bought one finally Friday woo hoo !!!!
I watched a few BD all seems fine just as good then PS3.

However, the audio options are different than the PS3. Instead of going through and selecting a bunch of audio formats in "settings"
    You just select
    PCM
    Bit stream"Dolby"
    Bit stream "DTS"
For games it sounds much better than PS3

Yep, my old PS3 (which has now gone to the big equipment cabinet in the sky), was the thick one. It could not be set to bitstream, only PCM.

I know there was a recent thread regarding suggested medium dollar bluray players (<$300), but can't find it. Anyone remember this thread and know where it is? Thanks

So should I spend a couple hundred on a used Oppo, or just invest in a good media PC with a bluray player that can bitstream to the Pioneer SC07? Will I be losing any video and/or audio sound quality with a PC vs. Oppo? Seems like the media PC will kill two birds with one stone, ie bluray player and movie/music archive/streaming source/etc. Thoughts?

I highly doubt an old Oppo is going to blow away NEW tech with processing that shames most laptops! As, above, I had not had the opportunity to see a PS4 in action to compare it to a PS3. But Sony has and continues to be a leader in video tech and their mid-tier blu-rays are pretty darn good. And the reviews leave not doubt that the PS4 has superior video processing, so much so that developers are still scrambling to produce games that are up to its capabilities.

Now a newer TOTL Oppo with that $1000+ price tag. Well, sure that probably has a better pic. At least it SHOULD! And if it doesn't, shame on OPPO!

The TOTL Oppo is built as a reference universal player, not a video player. The 105 should be on par with the 'entry' 103. The difference between the two is in the audio, not the video.

I know that. Just exaggerating for effect. In other words WHY bother to fork out big bucks for the 105 if you're "only" there for the video. For the audio, yes!

And the reference above is not to the 103, which is newer, but the older 83. Which I certainly cannot see besting a PS4 (current tech) in video processing?

If I were interested in a Universal player I would consider the 105. But to tell you the truth, I'd probably go with a Marantz SA800X series for audio only.

So if I can build a PC with same video and audio performance as Oppo BDP-93, why bother with an Oppo?
