Please thank a vet this weekend

I think it is mainly meant to honor combat vets, but many like me volunteered and stood ready, I just was not called to step into war.
As a member of the Old Guard unit, I remember well getting out into Arlington Cemetery well before sunrise and placing a small American flag in front of more than 250,000 markers.
Talk about realizing why we were called Americas Honor Guard
Have a great Memorial Day all, and hope your weather is as nice as ours is this weekend.

Yeah Scotty I think your right. And thank you.
Anne Marie and I are going to the Charlestown RI Memorial Day Parade at noon and her son is marching in it. Frankie (14 yrs old) is a Sea Cadet so he'll be marching with them.

My Facebook post in regards to Memorial Day:Don't thank those of us who served this Memorial Day. That is not the purpose of this holiday. It is to remember those who fell defending this great nation of ours. Thank those of us who served on Veterans Day. We will happily wait."Some people find it easier to be conceited rather than correct."

The only vet that I know (still living, barely) is a German Marine designer that got out of Germany at the end of the war by the skin of his teeth. He designed their submarines and when the war was lost Hitler ordered all the scientists killed to keep them from falling into the allies hands. He escaped by less than one hour.
Then spent the next 40 years working for General Dynamics in the Electric Boat Division designing subs for us.
Probably not what most people think of when someone says a vet. -
Thanks Scottyboy for the post and for the work and efforts you put forth with The Old Guard who honor our Fallen. God Bless Them All.

Whether you're a Sammy fan or not, this old song has a great message for our veterans. THANK YOU for your service!!

I served in the Army, honorable discharge. However I just worked on computers (MOS 74C) and wasn't in a war nor was I infantry. I also feel like this holiday isn't for me, it's for the people that died or truly risked their lives. I only geeked out on computers and did PT.afterburnt wrote: »They didn't speak a word of English, they were from South Carolina.

Better yet... Buy them a dinner or at least a beer...
My dad and uncle are still surviving WWII vets
My nephew is active US Marine Corps.
My Uncle is ex US Army lifer who was a Ranger in WWII and survived D-Day . He is a retired Sgt. Major. He joined when he was a 16 y.o kid.
My dad joined the Navy when he was 15 1/2 and was on transport ships crossing the Atlantic to supply the Brits.
My Nephew started in a Marine Expeditionary Unit and did 2 tours in Iraq and 1 in Afghanistan. He went to sniper school and is now an instructor.
I don't know if anyone has read Brokaw's "Greatest Generation". He was correct; they certainly are.
Everyone who graduates high school should be required to read that book and take a test on recognizing the accomplishments of that incredible time in history. Not just about those who served in the Military but also those who sacrificed so much to rid the world of tyranny.
Freedom is NOT free.
God Bless America.

Absolutely.
The wife was recently in Atlanta on business. While standing in line at the security check point, a soldier says to her...."Go ahead M'am". My wife looks up and says...."No Sir, YOU go ahead, and thank you. "
Wouldn't you know a little 20 something c u next Tuesday, cuts in front of both of them. The wife, bless her soul, gave her a tongue lashing and made her step off. The little **** gave her a look like she was disgusted, the soldier gave her a wink and a quiet thank you.

^^^^ .... Awesome. : ' )
Here's a link worth clicking, IMO, from the National Veterans Art Museum in Chicago for their "Above and Beyond" display.
http://www.nvam.org/above_beyond/
It is true that Memorial Day is for remembrance of those who died in service to their country.
But ...... I'll just point out the significance of the "One black dog tag" in the "Above and Beyond" display as deemed so by fellow veterans of the Vietnam War.
