This is gonna be a lil long winded but I have to say just how AWESOME the CS is at Oppo Digital. About a year and a half ago I purchased a used Oppo BDP-83 Blu-Ray player from my brother from another mother SherardP. Unit was in like new condition, not a mark one one it. Anyone that’s purchased anything from Sherard knows how well he takes care of his gear. Anyways, upon receiving the unit it worked flawlessly for roughly a year and then I started getting the dreaded disc drawer not wanting to open/close. After pressing the eject button numerous times and lightly tapping the top of the unit it would open. Not a big deal until you tried to use the remote to eject a disc and then it just became an annoyance. Other than that, unit worked flawlessly.
Finally, I decided to just send the unit in to have it repaired. Contacted Oppo, they gave me a RMA # and I shipped it off to Cally from Virginia. It takes a week to ship the unit from here to there so I shipped it out on Friday, they received it the following Friday. Got an email stating they had received the unit and were working on it. Later that afternoon received another email saying the unit had been repaired and it was on its way back to me. WOW!!!! I thought they don’t mess around at Oppo. A week later I received my unit back.
When I purchased the unit from Sherard he no longer had the original shipping box but when it was shipped to me it was double boxed and bulletproof. Needless to say, I basically sent Oppo the unit in the same packaging that Sherard shipped it to me in. Upon receiving my unit back from Oppo they shipped it back in the original shipping container that Oppo uses all in the nice cloth Oppo bag, etc. When I first inspected the unit the first thing I noticed was it looked different. The unit I shipped in was kind of a dark slate grey in color but the unit I got back was black in color. I just assumed maybe they gave me a refurbished unit back but either way, didn’t mind as long as it worked, actually liked the black better anyways. Plugged the unit in, tested the drawer opening and closing, it worked perfect. Once I got everything hooked back up to the H/T room, got all my settings redone cause when you send a unit back to Oppo, they make sure it has all the latest firmware and they flash the unit as well so you lose all your settings.
Anyways, began watching a movie, as before unit ran beautiful. About 45 minutes into the movie, the laser froze, needless to say, I was peed off. Tried rebooting the unit, tried unplugging the unit and letting it sit for a few minutes, nothing. Once putting any type of disk in the player, you could hear it trying to load but only to get the "NO DISC" error message. Contacted Oppo and the tech walked me through the process of how to remove the top cover and the cover over the laser to try and clean it to see if maybe that was the issue it wouldn’t read a disc anymore. Needless to say, was given another RMA # to send it back yet again. This time Oppo wanted to charge me a one-time flat rate fee of $79 for being out of warranty. Once I explained I just had the unit in for repair of the drawer not opening correctly they waived the fee and just had me send the unit back yet again. I sent the unit back and they received it last Friday. I received a phone call Saturday from tech support. Gentleman explained just how sorry he was for me having to send the unit back a second time but reassured me the unit would be in like new condition when I received it back. Apparently, due to the damage the unit sustained the first time I sent the unit in, what…… wait a minute, what damage I asked. Apparently my packaging wasn’t bulletproof for UPS. Gentleman sent me pictures of what my unit looked like when they received it and the whole darn face of the unit was broke. Certainly explains why the unit looked different, Oppo replaced the whole front face as well as the top cover at no cost to me. He said that apparently the laser stopped working which he guessed was due to the abuse the unit received in shipping but just didn’t show any signs of it when they replaced the loader drawer part. Said, the unit had been under extensive testing for the last 24 hours and unit should be in NEW condition when I receive it Saturday.
After all I’ve been through for the last month with what I thought would be a simple fix I would sure think I’d be a whole lot more frustrated with Oppo even though I know it’s not Oppo’s fault just the whole shipping and waiting process has tried my patience. Told Oppo, even after the whole process I still wanted to order the newer BDP-103D edition and the gentleman said he would see what he could do to help me out with that. Have no idea what he meant by what he said but either way, just glad to see there are still companies out there that stand behind their product even after it’s out of warranty.

Thanks Grimmster for your wonderful testimonial. I love my Oppo 103 and it's getting harder to find companies like Oppo with true rock solid integrity that backs up their product.

Well, finally got my BDP-83 back this past Saturday and couldn't be happier. Unit looks and runs like a brand new unit. Face and top cover were completely replaced with new pieces and the loader frame as well as the laser were replaced as well. Can't thank Oppo enough for taking car or me and the best part about it was other than shipping didn't cost me a dime. Kudos Oppo!!Money Talks, Mine says Goodbye Rob!!!!

I posted about a similar experience a while back with the same issue and same player. They're a great company to work with and I certainly wish more people were like them.

Same here, I got tired of waiting for a good deal on a used Pioneer 51FD, so instead just went out and bought a new Oppo 103 (yes, my arm is still sore from being twisted behind my back LOL). The thing is rock solid, quiet, extremely quick loading, customizable, etc.
I have absolutely no doubt this will be a keeper for many years.
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?
