I've been using the PB 13 Ultra for about 6 months now. The thing i notice most about it is that I no longer notice any LF deficiencies in my system.

PB13 is on my wish list for someday but my 25-31PC+ leaves a smile on my face...

After reading this thread I'm really considering one of these subs. I have a paradigm dsp 3200 now. Will I hear a big difference with a svs?

Even if it's a sb or pb 2000? I know I can't get anything bigger or more expensive.

  • Hooray!

My first real speaker is in place and setup!

Received the SVS SB-2000 on Saturday, calibrated the receiver but it really didn't sound any better than my Polk PSW10.

Knowing that I really don't know anything I called SVS support today (Sunday) when they first opened at 12 PM EST.

I believe it was Ed who walked me through settings on my receiver and the SW.

I did have the everything correct on the SW, I just needed to turn the volume between the 1 and 2 o'clock position.

He was on the phone with me for 25 minutes while I found my Matrix Blu-ray and played the whole rooftop helicopter rescue scene.

I don't know if my terminology is correct but it definitely is tighter and delivers a punch. But not just window rattling thundering bass for the sake of bass. But a bass that just blends well all around well.

Can't wait to put it through its paces!

Definitely glad I made the investment. Rather than thinking about a second one I need to upgrade my other speakers. LSiM703's and Skylan stands on the way and hopefully in place Jan 15!

My pb ultras didn't sound so impressive out of the box, after a few weeks of break in the driver will loosen up some.

Also I think you got used to the unrefined boomy bass of the psw10. The svs puts out clean tight bass. Give it some time for your ears to get accustomed to the sound, and some break in. You will find that the Polk sub sounds like junk if you swap it back in.

So after 7 years I’m starting the slow path of upgrading my equipment. I really didn’t know that I needed to.

My first upgrade piece is the SB-2000 that will be delivered tomorrow. I never thought I’d spend $699 on speakers, let alone one speaker, haha.

Second upgrade - LSi M 703’s will hopefully be in house by Jan 12.

Hopefully these two will allow me to hear what I’ve been missing and both movies and some Jazz/Classical.

Guess my wallet will be hurting over the coming years….but think of the fun!

I feel timid for listing my equipment, but let the journey begin.

And so it begins....turn back while you can...unless of course your wallet is feeling too heavy in which case I have some education funds for my kids that could help lighten that load :smiley
I started out by looking at setting up the rti10 I had for five years and now I have new towers, new sub, power amps...lol, enjoy the journey and enjoy the new sub. I had been resisting a new sub purchase for a year, but as they say, resistance is futile! I have the sb2000 as well and it I a lot tighter than my old sub, and not as loud, but loud enough until the kids get older. Having said that I am.sure I will end up getting a second one down the line sometime. I need to find time to properly set this one up first...and my 45 day trisl period is almost up!

Yes....someone should have warned me to turn back when I created my first post asking for recommendations! :)

My wallet certainly isn't heavy... having a freshman in college!

I just need to figure out what I'm using more of HT/Music and so far music is the clear winner.

Now... I need to figure out what pre/amp combo or set up that will work well with 703's and the SB2000. Looking for something in the $1500 range this year to give me a little umph...(but I have no clue when it comes to pre/amp tube, SS, integrated...etc.) Someone had recommended the Dayens Menuetto for the 703's. But I don't know how I would integrate the sub with that...which is question I have in general. How do you ingrate the sub with music system. Every time I think I learn something, there are two more aspects that confuse me!!!

Anyway, if I upgrade for the music side I'll just rewire into the AVR when I watch a movie.

I have about 30 days or so left on my 45 day trial. I called SVS tech support and they walked me through setting up the sub to my system. As a matter of fact, the help me set my AVR up properly....I said I was a n00b! They told me to call back once I got my 703's and they would run through the setup again.

I am wondering if the Ed you spoke to is the same Ed who helped me out all those years ago when I was considering an SVS? He happened to be a member here as well, going under the screen name Dr. Spec, IIRC? We exchanged many emails over a few weeks, and while he was always mindful of not bashing anything Polk had out there, I couldn't help but detect a sense of "you GOTTA try one to believe one" in his replies!
I ended up waiting a little bit before getting a B-stock PB12-NSD/2 ; still the single best audio purchase I ever made, though the 2Bs run a close 2nd!

Congrats on the new sub, definitely a step in the right direction IMO.
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

If your having trouble with placement....otherwise I wouldn't. Maybe try adjusting it better if your experiencing port noise. Placement is also key, you have to experiment a bit, but plugging a port should be a last resort in my book. If it's the only port, then definitely not.

I know that they have the option of plugging ports on their higher end stuff and I was thinking that the PB1000 could be a little more musical. I wish I just had the SB version for that system.

The higher end stuff has multiple ports, so plugging one or 2 isn't a big problem. If the sub only has one port, plugging it is a no-no. That pressure has to go somewhere, and if you don't give it an escape, what do you think will happen ?

I believe you folks are talking about Ed Mullen, who was a rather prominent audio reviewer for years, and now works at SVS. He is indeed extremely knowledgeable, and firmly believes in the SVS brand and line of products. He is the man.

He, and really all of SVS's staff, are simply the best customer service people out there. Ed and other SVS staff have spent many afternoons with me setting, calibrating, and tweaking my equipment, and two of my three SVS subs I bought used! That is one main reason why I keep buying SVS.

I believe you folks are talking about Ed Mullen, who was a rather prominent audio reviewer for years, and now works at SVS. He is indeed extremely knowledgeable, and firmly believes in the SVS brand and line of products. He is the man.

    Yep...just checked a followup email from them(him).

Yep and indeed the former Dr Spec here on CP. IIRC back then he rocked RT800's and moved on to Lsi7's. He started propping SVS back then that if you didn't like it HE would pay the return shipping. Still own mine to this day on his recommendation..

Is it advisable to try and plug the port on a PB1000?

If your having trouble with placement....otherwise I wouldn't. Maybe try adjusting it better if your experiencing port noise. Placement is also key, you have to experiment a bit, but plugging a port should be a last resort in my book. If it's the only port, then definitely not.

I know that they have the option of plugging ports on their higher end stuff and I was thinking that the PB1000 could be a little more musical. I wish I just had the SB version for that system.

Upgrade to the sb2000, if less than a year old.

damn I dont have the money and got about 3 weeks to do it

I have a PB10-ISD in my HT system that gets occasional SACD, redbook CDs, and music streaming. I think it is similar to your newer PB1000. I find it very musical in my room. Have you played with the phase, or better yet, have someone else sweep the phase while you are in your listening position? Took me a little while to get it dialed in with some big Paradigms, but it is sweet now.

I also use the SB12-NSD in my 2 channel system. Very musical, but that is it's only purpose. If you are using it for HT as well, I'd recommend staying with a ported sub. Just my take though from personal trials.
