Okay, I've always thought these two were the same, but now I'm thinking maybe not.

I've got several 5.1 DTS discs (Stings Brand new Day and the Eagles Hell Freezed Over among the newest)...are these the same as DVD-Audio?

What is the difference between DVD Audio and 5.1 encoded discs, or are they the same???

DVD-Audio is either 24bit 96kHz (6 channel) for 24bit 192kHz for two channel. DTS audio is like 18bit 48kHz, so it's much higher resolution of audio.

So DVD Audio is better then?

Okay, I know I should use the 5.1 outputs when playing DVD Audio.

Is there a DVD player that anyone knows of that I can use the 5.1 outputs for DVD Audio and also for watching movies, but that does the decoding itself...I know this sounds stupid, bare with me...

My receiver does not have DD or DTS decoding, but has 5.1 inputs, so I am using the little Klipsch unit to do the decoding and sends the signal out to my receiver via 5.1 ourputs... my receiver has only one set of 5.1 inputs. You can see my delimna...

Either I have to use the coax or optical from my DVD player to the Klipsch for DVD Audio and movies and loose quality on the audio side...or...

I have to use the 5.1 from the DVD player straight to the receiver for audio and have no DD or DTS decoding...or...

I can do both of the above and switch out the 5.1 on the back of my receiver every time I change sources, not really an option.

So if I could find a DVD player that will do DVD-A, SACD, and DD and DTS decoding ALL through the 5.1 outputs, I'd be a happy happy man....anyone know of such a device???

I think Pioneer makes a multi format player under like $200 check that out. it plays SACD, DVD-a, DVD-video. DTS, DD.. MP3. etc. that would solve your problem.

danger boy is correct, the Pioneer 563 is a great universal player for under $200. Of course you could go with either of the Denons, but they are priceyer.

Yep, if you are looking to keep it cheap the Pioneer 563A is a good choice. I bought mine open box at Best Buy a few weeks ago for $120. I think they sell for $149 now, normal price (they originally sold for $179). It is a pretty solid little player with decent build quality considering the low price point. It will play DVD-Audio, SACD and all of the normal formats.

One thing...if you use the 5.1 outputs for the decoding I don't believe you will be able to do any speaker level adjustments through your receiver...any adjustments you make will have to be done through the DVD player. I guess that is okay, just not how I am used to calibrating things.

I'm sure the Denon universal players offer better build quality (and probably better sound/video quality...whether or not that is visible or audible probably depends on you and your system), but they should for 3 times the price (and up).
