POP!

I was rearranging my Wyred 4 Sound mono's in the rack and had the speaker cables disconnected at the amp end while still connected at the speaker end. I get the amps in position and start connect things. Being the dummy that I am, while connecting the negative speaker wire to the amp, I accidentally hit the "on" switch and instantly heard a loud pop through the speaker. I was still wiggling in the negative wire while it happen which is why I think it popped. Luckily, I was testing out the little Pioneer bookies and not the new Harbeth's :#

The mono's are 570wpc @ 8ohms so it's my assumption that a good amount of juice got through. There was no smoke and the speaker appears to have gotten away unscathed, but that audiophile OCD is telling me I messed something up. I definitely can't detect anything wrong while listening to them so I guess I'm just interested in hearing what exactly happened and a worse case scenario.

I'd give a call to W4S and describe what happened. IIRC those amps have protective circuitry so they may be ok. VERY GOOD that you only had cheapie speakers connected though!

As long as everything is working fine in the system I wouldn't be concerned. I managed to blow a fuse in a preamp once when doing something similar with speaker cables. The speakers and amp were fine. Electricity can do strange things to electronics, which is why I disconnect the entire system from wall power for the last few years before touching any cables. That is for avoiding both short circuits and static discharges in the system. I cleaned a turntable stylus once with the phono preamp on but the rest of the system off. As soon as I turned the preamp on there was a very loud pop through the speakers as the built up charge went through the system. No damage done with that fortunately!

If your "audiophile OCD" actually worked then it would have told you to disconnect the system from the power before doing anything.

Didn't "a friend" do this to your SDA-2Bs a few years ago too, after you'd just put some new RD-0198 tweeters in them?

Shane, we've all done dumb stuff with gear, so you're in good company. I can tell you, many have paid a greater price.

Ain't that the truth. Since were coming clean here I had a gross accident once. While still recuperating from surgery and only using one hand trying to fit the right x-over on it's stanchions it didn't quite fit right. After a while it gave way slid across it's base and blew a 6503 stereo driver on my right 2B. I luckily managed managed to grab a driver on E-bay for $19 just a year newer. They and their x-overs are doing just fine. Me, I tore my other rotator cuff in sympathy for the other one.

He did Cath, he accidently hit the power button hooking up the cables because on those amps, the power switch is in the back if I'm not mistaken.

Tony disconnecting and turning it off are two different things. When I say disconnect, I mean you unplug from the wall. Most of my gear is plugged into a power strip when that power strip gets turned off then unplugged before I touch anything! For me that is just common sense.

Cathy I do the same. Anytime I'm working on my rack the APC and Furman are off and disconnected.

Has saved me quite a bit lol....

But everyone learns their lessons somehow...

I got electrocuted about 2 weeks ago playing behind my APC. Couldn't find the hole (teehee) and held the plug where i felt the connecters...before you I knew it, it slid into the socket and I was still holding the plug. Got jolted like a **** and ended up punching the underside of my rack trying to let go of the plug.

Moral of story, unplug yo shite! :D

Agreed! Yesterday I was moving things around - the 1st thing I did was go unplug my line conditioner from the wall outlet as I picture Cathy Slapping me upside the head saying: "Unplug your Stuff" :p

Dumb moment for me was when I was removing one of the 5804 drivers from my SRT's and poked a small hole on the rubber surround with the screw driver! I was in tears, luckily I had a spare on hand. I did manage to repair that rubber surround with some rubber cement from a bicycle tire patch kit! Just rubbed a small amount of the cement on the backside of the driver and it's still holding pretty good. (sans patch)
I was suprised this method worked, I came across it after searching on how to repair the carnage!

I know that sound, its the sound of money leaving your wallet.
Buddy gave me a 1970 something audio research D-100 something solid state amp to play with my new (at the time) CM9s. Connected it, turned it on and POP! Blew the two woofers in my right speaker.
Crazy b/c it was working fine for years and year at his house.
Turns out it was something to do with the way the PSU sits and the glue melting away over time, causing the power supply and body to short out. Wrong place at the wrong time.
