Wow, Tony, that's crazy...and scary! A dog of that size and strength that isn't totally stable can be a nightmare. As Dan said, glad it wasn't worse. You gave it a good shot, and in the end did the right thing. I hope your dog recuperates physically, as well as emotionally from the trauma.

I have tried so many times to "get another pet" so that my lone animal will have companionship and each time it has backfired on us by changing the dynamics of the lone pet even to the point of drastic personality disorders. We are a 1 dog, 2 feline family at the moment. Here is a pic of our Pyrenees "Hugo" as a pup. He is now 130 lbs.g5zfs8fhlmwa.jpg

Sorry to hear this. Sounded like a job for Ceasar Milan. Such a shame the owners were not up front with you. After losing my beloved Golden Retriever last year it's getting harder and harder to have a dog and out live it. The better half says we will always have some kind of mutt in the house. Hopefully your dog will heal quickly and the shepherd gets a good home with someone who will work with him.

Yeah, that dog will need to be the only dog in a household. The thing with taking in older dogs for adoptions is you have to know when to cut the cord when things go south. You have to also know the limits of your abilities. Some people simply don't do that over wanting a dog so badly that they put themselves or another animal in harms way to try and make it work. That's when the horror stories pop up.

As it turns out, this dog was never socialized. Was even on an electric collar inside the house and only allowed in 2 rooms, kitchen and family room. In a 4500 sq. ft. house yet. Was deathly afraid of stairs too, never was allowed to go up any out of fear of getting shocked. Well, I have stairs....and worked with her for 3 days to get her to freely go up and down and succeeded there.

Anyone who gets a big powerful dog of any breed needs to socialize it with people and other dogs from a young age, period. Otherwise don't get the darn dog, your not doing them any favors.

Nice Pyrenees up top, wife wants a Newfie, almost the same thing.

Sounds like the former owners treated it as an object, such a shame. They should've never had the dog in the first place. That poor shepherd, I hope he gets a good loving home with someone who will work with him in the proper way.

Sorry to hear you had to return the dog. Sounds like it has multiple issues from the owners treatment.

2 nail heads hit with one stroke there Tony. Socialization with larger dogs is an absolute must. I make sure my dog has some sort of interaction with other people, kids, dogs, whatever on a daily basis. Considering she could fit the next door neighbor kid's head in her mouth, she needs to be constantly reminded that that is a no no, I'm in charge, etc. Thankfully, the rescue I got her from was VERY forthright. Most of their dogs either didn't play well with others, chased cats or kids or whatever, so the one I landed on really was the right fit for me, thanks to their honesty.

Hope she ends up in a home that fits her well, and good on you for trying. Can't say I blame you for saying no. I told the mastiff rescue a good 20 times, "she attacks my cats or any neighborhood kids even once and she's gone." Again, honesty was the best policy for both sides.
