Does anyone know if it makes a difference using the single digital out vs the 6 channel out for dvd-a? If the digital co-ax can transmit 5.1 why the need for the 6 channel output? I ask because I want to hook up a SACD as well, and only have one 6 channel input on the receiver.

    all receivers that i know of only have one set of 6 RCA inputs.

    you HAVE to use the 6 RCA's to get true DVD-a or SACD. yes you can use a digital coax cable and still get audio. but your player will not be reading the hi resolution tracks from your SACD or DVD-a.

    the need for 6 RCA cables is so the people can't copy DVD-a or SACD. they are analog inputs and cables.

    go out and get your self a SACD cable with 6 RCA's or use three pairs of RCA cables = 6 total.

    What danger boy said is correct. The record companies, through the RIAA as a lobbying arm, had pettioned Congress to protect their interests regarding high resolution digital payback mediums; basically SACD and DVD-A. The ruling was that the hardware manufacturers could make the equipment for the consumer to play high resolution digital audio, but the equipment manufacturers had to provide a safeguard. Thus, the only way to connect a high rez audio source to a reciever is through analog jacks or through a proprietory method such as firewire.

    But there is a simple solution for your situation, buy a universal player. One machine, one set of jacks.

    There is just one modification to what danger boy said; most 2002 or newer recievers have 2 or more sets of 6 channel analog input jacks. I have a real cheap Sony 895, and it has two multi-channel inputs, and most Yamahas and Denons have 3 sets of multi-channel analog inputs.

    rockman, thanks for the info. i didn't know the technical reasons behind the copyright protections.

    Are you sure your receiver has two sets of analog inputs? It must be newer than mine. are you sure one set of yours isn't the pre outs? they look and are labled the same as the multi channel analog inputs are. i got confused myself the first time i looked at the back of my receiver.
