MIT Question - Shotgun S3 vs AVt vs CVT

Hey guys,
I'm looking to step up my cables for the main system and got a great recommendation on the MIT Shotgun S3's. the Shotgun S3.3's are out of my range right now, so this is just for the S3's.

I'm fairly settled on the S3's, but in some frenzied early morning reading, I also happened across the other lines MIT offers - the AVt and CVT. What are these series cables designed for, and how might the Shotgun S3's compare (excel?)? What can I expect to be better?

This is for a 2ch setup where I am using
  • Either a Halo P5 or B&K Reference 5
  • HCA-3500
  • 2.3TL's
  • Source is Squeezebox Touch with varying apps - Spotify, Pandora, Streaming Radio. Planning to re-rip some of my favorite music to check out higher resolution listening.

I do understand that my listening method is probably the weak link in this equation. Not necessarily the SBT, but the way I'm accessing the music with it in some cases. I have some subscriptions where the media streams at up to 320Kbps, but Pandora, obviously, and some of the other stations, much lower quality.

I'm going to go ahead and sheepishly admit that I've grossly neglected cables while I was trying gear trying to settle on a system configuration I like, so I'm using Monoprice speaker and IC's right now. I'm mostly satisfied, but want to see what this cable business is all about for myself.

I tried some Signal Ultra stuff recently but so far haven't noticed anything particularly profound.

Many options available. I have found its more a trial and error process. Also finding members that have the same types of equipment can point you to options that might work well with your equipment.

I have been very happy with Dougs cables. Great guy to work with and that P5 you have has already been warmed up to his cables. http://www.douglasconnection.com/

Buy the Shotgun S3's and you will be astounded at the difference these cables bring to your listening experience (compared to Monoprice).

Taken from a recent Audioholics reply regarding "Club Polk" and Polk speakers:
"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion." :\
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

I can't even imagine. I was astounded at the difference when I went from Monoprice to a handmade set I bought from a member.

meant to say above, not meaning to trash Signal or anything, not in the least. I am certainly impressed with the build quality, and don't have any regrets at purchasing, as got a nice deal from a cool member here. Just looking for that secret door and key combination I see you guys talking about with cables, proper source, and gear synergy, and not quite there yet.

Thanks for that, Todd. good recommendation on speaking with others with similar gear and system goals to get close. Yes, I was looking around at some of Doug's stuff, too, and have seen others posting up with positive experiences. Just looked recently, and I would like to maybe build some stuff, so maybe in my secondary system. Just had an opportunity on some MIT's so that's more why I'm posting about them right now.

yes, that P5 is proving quite the nice addition. I've barely tapped its capabilities though, since it's not yet in use in my main system or with main speakers. currently been testing it with a B&K EX-442, LSiM703's, and the Squeezebox connected to the P5 by optical. it's very nice. next cable purchase is going to be a nice coaxial, and then maybe the power supply upgrade for the SBT.

excellent, thanks for that feedback, Jesse.

I think I'm gonna skip the AVt/CVT and go straight for the S3's at this point, and see where that gets me. Would love the opportunity to demo all the different cables I'm curious about. Is there some kinda cable "rental" kinda company out there? I've seen this before with camera gear, where you essentially buy/borrow the equipment to see how it works for you, and pay a discounted fee if you decide you want to keep it, otherwise return.

crap, guys, sorry - I missed these posts while I was typing mine; it was up on my screen for a while and I was back and forth.

@headrott - care to comment on the differences I might expect with the S3's? or maybe it's better I just get virgin ears on. really have no idea what to expect, as I've never really heard a system with good cables in it.

@PSOVLSK - what did you find? and what did you move to from the m-price stuff?

@thsmith - good lookin' out! that's the same place another member directed me earlier, hence the mad scramble for info/decision to be able to get some while still available.

so I went ahead with the S3's - got a set of speaks and an IC. that'll get me going on my 2ch. just need a nice digital coax next.

I can't remember what it was I went to from the Monoprice. Still have them and they are nice, but they ain't MIT S3's. lol. As far as IC's go, I've had several, most notably MIT Exp2, and Doug's basic line. I found those to be comparable, but I'm using Doug's because my MIT's were about 10' long and Doug's are custom made in the length I needed. Also, Doug is a great guy and I'm happy to support him.

The Monoprice I was using were their entry level. If that's what you have I can't imagine the difference between them and the MIT. You are going to be lovin it...unless, of course, cables don't matter :p I say that in jest, but I'm not one that can pick out differences in cable unless the differences are pretty significant.
