Help please with CD player noise

I recently bought a Cambridge Azur 540C CD player (without testing it).

It has an intermittent static sound that comes and goes.

On some tracks it sounds fine, then the noise starts, kind of a rhythmic, pulsing, hissing, distortion. Sometimes gets so bad it is unlistenable. Seems worse on inner and outer tracks.

Same problem whether I use the RCA outputs or the optical output.

I get the same noise (sometimes) when I am using it as a transport to a DAC, or as a CD player.

I blew it out with compressed air, an also ran a CD/DVD cleaning disc with a brush. Can't find my tiny Torx drivers to get the case off to clean the lens.

I like the sound quality when it is working without static.

Has me mystified (which is not hard to do). After all.....I'm just a caveman.

Any suggestions on what the problem is or ideas for fixing it?

Thanks!

Is the noise coming through the speakers or is the noise inside the CDP?

  • Oh, good point, the sound is coming through the speakers. The player itself does not seem to make any unusual mechanical noises.
    Thanks!

Since you don't hear any noise in the player it could be anything from a bad solder joint to a funky logic board.

Well, if it happens as both a transport, and as a player, then that means it is in the digital circuitry. This will be a hard problem to troubleshoot since it is intermittent. You can try reseating any connections, but a component failing seems more likely. Is it heat related? That is, does it happen right away, or has to play a while before occurring? Heat related is another indication of a component failure.
