Hello,
Well I know this is not the newest model of the Onkyo 6 series but it is new out of the box for me. Amazon $279 shipped. I got this to temporary replace my Sony STR-DA5700ES till it gets fixed and then it will go in the bedroom to replace a non HDMI older ES receiver.
I received the unit on Sunday, hooked it all up and ran the Audyssey and just started to listen for a bit. Now after a few days of playing with it. I am impressed the over all sound quality is very good. I have been trying to manual adjust the sound but I am running into a wall.
Audyssey set all my speakers to -7db and the sub to -15db
Bass in music is lacking and a little in movies. adjusted the sub to -10
DLNA is having a problem, when I right click on my PC "play to" it comes up with an error "cannot control device" I thought this receiver was a DLNA render.
Other than on the receiver it self I cannot find how to adjust the bass or treble on the unit.
Over I am impressed with this receiver. My Sony ES is a "flagship" receiver which had an MSRP of $1699 while the Onkyo had a new MSRP of $499. For one third of the cost this receiver is a nice unit and has a sound Q that come close to the Sony flagship receiver, until I crank it up. At ear bleed level I can tell the Onkyo is lacking while the Sony would be going strong. Now I want to try the 838 but mama would kill me if I spent $800 on a new receiver.

Think you can only adjust bass and treble on the AVR.
Be careful with the ear bleeding levels. This is one of the recommended ways to let the magic smoke out of your speakers, and in some cases the AVR also. -

Ear Bleed to me is not blow it up. I like my Scorpions loud and movies to sound like a theater. On the Sony ES it was at about -10db to -5db with no one home. I took the Onkyo up to 70 for a bit and it was good and how I like it. at 80 it started to sound a little weak. Normal is about -20db on the Sony and it looks like 55 on the Onkyo.
Does anybody have any tips on how to best dial in this Onkyo. the SQ from this low cost receiver is very impressive. I just need to get it dialed in but not owning anything but Sony for the last 20+ years it's a little hard.
BTW I once during a party had a friend crank some Rush up to +15db on the Sony and OMG that was loud but it still sounded very good. even the neighbors said they liked it.When I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down. Now I'm an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down.

Set your volume to the relative scale so it will display the negative numbers like the Sony. Audyssey will "optimize" everything so you cannot adjust bass and treble using audyssey. You can adjust the eq manually with audyssey off. There are probably two audyssey curves one for music and one for movies. You should find them in the quick menu along with a temporary sub level adjustment for your preferences during playback. I had the 717 for a while and I really liked it too. I used its DLNA functions wiith jriver without a hitch, but media monkey didn't play nicely with it. The smartphone app for the onkyo is pretty good and allows you to select the from the DLNA server right from the phone, which was easier than scrolling the LCD screen on the front, as I dislike listening to music with the tv on.Oh, Listen here mister. We got no way of understandin' this world. But we got as much sense of this bird flyin in the sky. Now there is a lot that bird don't know, but it don't change the fact that the world is happening to him all the same. What I am tryin to say is, is that the course of your life, well its changing, and you don't even see it- Forest Bondurant

Hello Hello,
So I sent the Sony in for warranty repair today, I hope this united radio place fixes it right. $75 for shipping....crud!
I am liking this Onkyo, for the money I spent it's a good little AVR. I had to rerun the Audyssey. Apparently I had the sub turned up too loud when I ran it last time. I had to turn it down till the mic read it at 75db and then let it redo all the speaker settings.
Movies sound great very close to the Sony. Music on the other hand is still lacking a bit. It sounds great on CD but flip over to Pandora and is goes to lifeless crud.
I still cant get DLNA to work right either.
Guess by the time I get this all dialed in I will get the Sony back. Yes I am crossing my fingers that United Radio fixes it right. When I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down. Now I'm an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down.

So after a weekend of playing with this nice little receiver I have it dialed in, even have DLNA working
Do I like it oooohhhh yes.
I had to rerun the setup. this time I closed every door and window in the house and ran the setup. started to sound even sweet. almost everything was set to 0DB. I got the DLNA to work by going into the DLNA menu and then I can stream from my PC. I found that when going from DLNA or Pandora that it set the sound field to "direct". This gives it a hallow sound. I had to change it manually on the receiver to stereo and it now sounds great.
I think I might try to Sell my 5700ES and 2100ES receivers and either try to get a Pioneer Elite or an 838. First I need to see how much I can get for the 2.When I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down. Now I'm an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down.
