Hello,

The other day my loved Sony STR-DA5700ES died. While watching a movie it just shut off, a warning flashed on the screen "fan stopped". It is still under warranty so I called Sony. I have to send at my cost the receiver to NY errrr. @ 50LB plus packing that is going to cost $100. Funny when I called the service rep I use to work with him in the CRT plant. He could not even get me a call tag. Said Sony won't do that any more and I have to ship to a 3rd party repair place in NY. Oh yah, I did try to replace the 40mm fan, the fan is good a board fried or some thing.

Now I will be out my main HT and music for a month or more till I get it back.

So I went over it with the wife and I can spend $300 on a temporary receiver that will move into the bedroom once the ES comes back. I was looking at either the Onkyo 626 or Pioneer 1023. Which of these is the better low end choice? When I was looking last night I should have asked for more of a budget, there is an awesome Pioneer on Amazon going for 60% off retail for $599. but in the long run that would just be a waste of money as what ever receiver I do get will be in the bedroom replacing and old Sony STR-DA2100ES.
When I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down. Now I'm an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down.

So Here is the place the Sony ES has to go to.

    United Radio Inc.
    5717 Enterprise Parkway
    East Syracuse, NY 13057

it's going to cost a bit to ship my Sony ES there.

I found one on CL I kind of liked http://sandiego.craigslist.org/ssd/ele/4984744923.html

but it has had at least 3 years of use and I don't want to be going through this again.

Going go to Fry's in a bit. they have the Onkyo for $289

Ok, I don't know that place. Reason I asked is there's a place in New York city that does 3rd party repairs for a lot of big names that I once sent a piece of gear to. When they called to discuss the repair I knew they had absolutely no idea what they were doing. I told them to just send it back.

Have you tried finding a local Sony authorized repair firm? Such a business should be able to handle warranty work.

Sony said there are none in San Diego County.

That is a little out of my budget for now.

I think I might be done with Sony now that I have had a taste of Onkyo. I really like this 626 I picked up from Amazon. For a mid range received It play very nice.

Think once I have the 5700ES back I will try to sell it and maybe even the 2100ES too. thake the money from the sale of both and get one of the THX Onkyo's or a Pioneer Elite.

I wish I had the money for an Integra they are now a little out of my price range.

I got a great deal on the Sony ES equipment I have, part of working for them for a long time. I paid like 50% of retail for my 5700ES my 2100ES was a Referb I got for less than $200 which I was able to inspect before it shipped. My loved DVP-NS3100ES DVD/SACD player was in the $200 range too.

I might try to sell all 3 my 5700ES, 2100ES receivers and the DVD/SACD 3100ES unit to try to get close to a Onkyo 838 or an 828.

Got an email from Sony... My loved 5700ES has a bad thermal sensor, bad part is it's on back order till late June or early July. Sony is offering me a new in box 5700ES to replace mine. I told them yes send it. A new in box receiver will be a lot easer to sell than a used repaired one.

Great news, I received my new 5700ES new in box. I posted for sale here and on CL. The good part is it shipped from Carson (only new comes from there) and not Laredo referb center.
