How to test possibly blown Peerless Tweeters??

Alright, this is my first post!! I'm trying to get to 100 posts quick so I can buy some speakers here!!

I just picked up a pair of 10A's for $40. Now I know why they went for only $40. There's lots of issues with these speakers. I will have to replace all of the mid-drivers as two are frozen and the others are rubbing. The crossovers don't look to be in the best condition either and I intend to replace them. When I tried to listen to the speakers they made no sound at all. So, I've pulled the tweets and I would really like to keep and use them. How can I test them when they are not connected to the crossover? I did test with my multi-meter and got inconsistent results......but, the most consistent result is 0 ohms... :( Ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Use the speaker wire that's going to the back of the 10A. Turn the bass all the way down, any type of loudness switch off, and volume all the way down first.

Edit: and don't turn it up very high.

I'm guessing it doesn't matter which wire goes to which terminal on the tweeter? I don't think the terminals are labeled and of course I don't remember which wire went to which side!

There is a positive and negative connection for the tweeter and drivers, so yes it matters.

Before doing anything else, check on binding post plate for a fuse. It's there to protect the tweeter from damage. If it's bad, the tweeter will not work.

Ah, yes....the fuses. The d-bag that had the speakers before me put tin foil around them.....so, nothing to blow....except the tweeters, right? I think I'm kidding myself in thinking the tweets will still work as he probably blew the tweeters since he put the foil around the fuses. Hoping for the best....

Question.....since the previous owner decided to put tin foil around the fuses, basically providing no protection...is it possible the tweets didn't blow and maybe just damaged the crossover instead? (crossing fingers)

Seriously? Tin foil? You shouldn't have even paid $40 for these, they should have been paying you to take them. :D

You're going to be in these for at least $300 just to get them going, maybe more. One persons opinion: they aren't worth it.

Yeah......I hear ya. I had been trying to find some 10's with the rosewood finish forever to match my 7's and since I don't see many 10's listed often, especially with the Peerless tweeters, so I bit.....plus I had just driven 25 miles at my lunch break and did'nt want to leave empty handed! At least I was able to talk him down from $125!! My next issue is deciding if it's worth it to replace some items on these or just wait for a new pair to show up someday.

You could get a pair of RTA-12B/C's or SDA 2B's for $300

Right now, if the tweets don't work I just plan to switch them out with the SL2000's from my 7's (once I get the RD0-194's) to get me by for now. I found used crossovers for the 10's for $7 on ebay, so basically just need to replace the mids. Ugh....probably need to just find a new pair.........

You can't use an SL2000 in place of a Peerless, for one the holes they mount in are different sizes and for another the crossover would need to be changed.

Right, the used crossovers I found are for the sl2000's, not the Peerless thankfully. My intention with these was/is to make them a restoration project....obviously, I was hoping the tweets would at least still be functional and I could've just upgraded the crossovers. So, wish me luck when testing the tweets when I get home!!!! :)

Thats why they use a fast blow fuse. To keep tweets safe. To wrap foil on fuse & over volume them = disaster. If the cabinets are in decent condition & you get lucky on parts. It may be worth it. The 10's are a great speaker. Lots here have them & enjoy them

Yeah, I have no idea why he would have put foil across them. The cabinets are good. So, I think I'll make a project of them.

  • MW audio sells a drop in replacement if you want new. I haven't heard them myself, but supposedly they sound close to the originals. https://www.midwestspeakerrepair.com/mw-audio-mt-4115-1-inch-dome-tweeter

The peerless tweeters show up a lot of ebay too of course.

Why are you replacing the xovers?

One of the crossovers appears burnt/leaking. I was hoping that was going to be the reason the tweeters weren't working....no such luck. I just happened to find a set on eBay that matched what I have already....they were only $7 and look great. I don't have the time or money to do the actual crossover upgrade right now, so I decided to just pick up the matching used crossovers for now.

I have a pair of the Midwest Speaker Peerless clones. They sound close to the Peerless. I currently am not using them. Pm me if you are interested in them. They have low hours on them.
