AKG 702

Anyone have experience with the 702's? If so, what sources and amplifiers did you like/dislike? Any recommendations appreciated! Thanks for the help

I've had Q701's for a while. They can be a bit picky about amps.
They prefer lots of warm sounding power
I can drive them from some of my older vintage gear, but can sound a bit thin.
I use Foobar with the advanced EQ plugin, and it helps to dial things in.
Don't do it by ear-look at the headphone freq response plot and use that
to adjust. The valleys and peaks aren't where you'd expect to find them-I'd certainly guess wrong.
I have an ASL MG head tube amp. It works fairly well with this amp.
When using this, no EQ needed. I paid $100 for the q701's used. Pretty darn
    good headphones at that price.

Oh, I'm not sure I want to take that plunge into the black hole of tube world yet but it's becoming a familiar tune of recommendation!

I like foobar- it's free and scalable- I choose which bells and whistles to add.
I'm sure there are solid state amps that will work ok with the 701.
You might have to tweak it a bit. Tubes are easy. I plugged it in,
decided I needed a bit more warmth, and swapped a tube. DONE.

Completely agree! I also have some Q701s. They sound pretty good off vintage amps/receivers, they need POWER, and really like TUBE amplification. You don't have to spend too much though. Something like the Qinpu headphone amp would be fine (may have to play with the tubes a little to tweak the sound). Warms them up and pumps them up.

The newer K-702s were tweaked to sound a lot like the Q701s which had a little more bottom end than early K-701s.

If you like this kind of sound you'll be happy!
