RM30s

Hi, I am upgrading my theater from 5.1 with rm301s and a rm302 to 9.1 and wonder if it is worth tracking down some matching rm50t and rm301 to add to the setup or go with newer speakers. love the speakers i have, just want it all to match. I am running an Onkyo tx-nr5010.

    Mildtowild,

First of all, let me start by saying that my response to you is highly biased. I am a big fan of the RM series. I started with Polk's RM6900 5.1 HTIB system and wondered what would happen if I added the bigger speakers and the larger subwoofers. Each time I added the bigger components, my system improved. I eventually ended up with RM6901 surrounds, RM7302 center, & RM8000T (RM50T) towers all flanked by SVS PC12-NSDs. I believe that the RM system is a very good system that did not get a whole lot of love. If you plan on keeping the RM system, I would say track down the towers.

If you love the speakers you have, you might as well see if you can find some matching ones to go with them. Since that line was discontinued several years ago, it might take some searching to find some in great shape, but if you do find them, you might be able to get them at a very good price.

A good friend has a 7.1 home theater setup with the RM7000 towers as fronts, RM302 center, RM201 surrounds, RM101 surround-backs and a DSWPRO 500 sub and it sounds terrific. You might even consider looking for some of the 201s or 101s for surrounds/back-surrounds/heights, etc. they do a fine job and work nicely with the lighter duty of those positions. You also might find you get much better results with getting some external power amp(s) to drive your front three speakers and let the AVR do the lighter lifting of the surrounds, etc.
