Calling owners of the Cary SLP-05

Calling owners of the SLP05 tube preamp.

I have noticed that my 802 diamonds are extremely transparent to the upstreams... and so I started playing with the input levels on the right side of the preamp, the two knobs that you can play with to adjust the right and left outputs independent of the main volume control.

My question for you guys - do you have the input levels maxed out or do you have the little knob marker pointed to the middle?

The reason I ask is the manual says that in the "max position, the input level is essentially out of the circuit"...

... key word is "essentially". Does this mean that it is or is not out of the circuit? You would assume that the less in the signal path, the better....

... but how come I noticed that the sound is technically better sounding with the inputs in the path (kept at the middle position) rather than maxed out and "essentially" removed from the circuit/signal path?

So baffled..

Wish I was an slp-05 owner. Can't help ya on the knob thing, but just set it to where it sounds the best and be done.

The Purist in audio will say that the less in the signal path the better. May be some truth to that in certain systems with certain ears but I have always found that it's not always the case.

I will let you know how it works out for me. Just got mine yesterday and only had time to unbox it. I should have some feedback over the weekend.

It's not eq, it's just a channel balance... Odd that it sounds better with it halfway rather than full way.

But sounds good either way!! Haha
