  • Dang it I posted the photos over my question... don't have time to retype... first two photos I noticed looked bad lol... three fuses were fine... plug the sub in, no source plugged in, hums... not necessarily the amp, but it puts out a signal to the subs and the subs hum, regardless of any knob settings. Noticed some browning on two areas, shown in first two photos.

    Hello,
In the first photo it looks as though the two capacitors in the middle have failed. I would certainly replace all four plus checkout the associated rectifiers and resistors and regulators, if there are any. The other "browned" part looks to be an inductor which should be looked at as well.
A failed power supply will cause humming.

Do you think this is something I should have a local shop look at, or send to an expert? There are a few guys that do repairs on Sunfire amps, and the prices range from $187-$260 +s&h. Think I should take it to a local shop??

    Hello,
I'm afraid I don't have any first-hand experience with Sunfire products, but my intuition would be that most of their products have enough of an uniqueness that a specialist is probably a good idea as opposed to a general repair shop. Those service charges seem to be reasonable enough.
    Good luck, Ken

If this is a Sunfire plate amp, I recommend that you pass on the repairs. The Sunfires are unreliable and will fail every couple of years. I had a Sunfire TSW Mark II and had the amp repaired three times before I gave up. The transformerless design causes all kinds of issues and the components fail.
